Jake outplayed Rodney in preseason. lol

Jake was 25/37 "67.8 completion percentage" for 267 yards with 2 touchdowns and no picks. He lead the team in all of those stats and had the highest QB rating on the team.

The reason Jake didn't start the opener is because John Fox is John fox and you have to loose your position on the team, it can't be taken from you. Rodney didn't do anything to loose his job, there fore he kept it.

Chris Weinke was decent in his first shot against a legitimate defense, and Jake Delhommedirected all three of Carolina's scoring drives. Either way, Rodney Peete is probably still the opening-day starter.

"I don't think Rodney did anything to lose the job," Delhomme said. "You have to have more than one quarterback in the league to finish the season."

Delhomme, an offseason free agent addition, threw two touchdown passes to lead Carolina to a perfect 4-0 preseason record for the first time in the franchise's nine-year history.

Washington Vs Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Stephen Davis' first play as a Carolina Panther was a 13-yard catch in front of the Washington Redskins bench.

Take that Steve Spurrier.Davis, released last winter after seven seasons in Washington because Spurrier didn't think he fit into the Redskins' offense, showed he's found a happy home in Carolina with a strong performance in the Panthers' 20-0 preseason victory Saturday night.Davis ran for 74 yards on seven carries."Stephen must have averaged 20 yards a carry," Spurrier said. "He was running right through us."Davis didn't reach the end zone for Carolina, but he reeled off 34-yard gain the third time he touched the ball. He had all his yardage well before the end of the first quarter and took pleasure in proving to Spurrier he's still one of the top running backs in the NFL."People got their own opinions," Davis said of Spurrier. "It felt good. It felt great. I went about it like I was playing anybody, and did I make a statement? Yeah. And I'll make a bigger statement in the regular season."Davis helped Carolina to its first win ever over Washington. The Panthers are 0-6 in regular season games against the Redskins, and had been 0-1 in preseason matchups. At first glance, the running back appeared to be everything the Panthers were looking for when they signed him to carry the ball at least 25 times a game."Deep down inside, he wanted to show them they're missing something without him there," quarterback Rodney Peete said.Buoyed by an improved offensive line -- first-round draft pick Jordan Gross started at right tackle -- Davis was able to find holes not normally there for the Panthers. On a 17-yard gain on his second series, he appeared to be stopped at the line of scrimmage, but cut left for a big gain.It took the pressure off Peete, fighting a four-way battle for the right to keep his starting quarterback spot."We're a team that wants to run the ball, we didn't do that successfully last year," Peete said. "That's why we got him. He opens up so many things for the rest of us."Peete hooked up with Muhsin Muhammad on three passes for 41 yards, setting up field goals of 24-yards by Shayne Graham and 28-yards by John Kasay to give Carolina a 6-0 lead.Rod Smart added a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 13-0 in the third quarter, Skip Hicks scored on a 4-yard run to make it 20-0.Washington, meanwhile, looked a world away from the preseason team it was last year.Spurrier threw everything he had into the preseason last year, his first as an NFL coach, and led the Redskins to a 4-1 mark while they set a record with 164 total points scored. He admitted last week all that focus on meaningless games was a mistake, and removed the emphasis from the final score this year. That's a good thing after the way the Redskins played against Carolina.Patrick Ramsey started the game and played an unimpressive first quarter, going 2-for-6 for 57 yards. The bulk of his yardage came on a 48-yard pass to Laveranues Coles, Washington's new $35 million receiver.Aside from that play, the Redskins sputtered and stalled out on most drives."They beat us in about every phase," Spurrier said. "Give those guys the credit, they dominated us. We're very disappointed because they beat us every which way."Rob Johnson, who replaced Ramsey in the second quarter, fumbled when he was sacked by Brian Allen and Carolina's Kavika Pittman recovered.Later, his 7-yard TD pass to Patrick Johnson was nullified by a holding penalty. Matt Simonton, signed Friday after kicker John Hall strained his groin, missed a 35-yard field goal attempt to keep the Redskins scoreless in the first half.Rob Johnson finished 10-for-16 for 107 yards and was intercepted once when Al Wallace tipped his pass at the line and Pittman caught it.Danny Wuerffel, battling Johnson for the right to back up Ramsey, went 4-for-9 for 58 yards in limited action.Carolina's quarterback battle wasn't exactly thrilling, either.Jake Delhomme, signed after five years as a backup in New Orleans, went 3-for-5 for 43 yards in the second quarter.Chris Weinke, trying to reclaim the starting job he had in 2001, played late into the fourth quarter and led the Panthers on its two touchdown drives. He finished 8-of-11 for 69 yards.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- To no one's surprise, John Fox and the Carolina Panthers got the best of the New York Giants with defense.

Safety Mike Minter scored on 43-yard fumble return and Carolina shook off the effects of a blackout to beat New York 20-10 on Friday in Fox's first game at Giants Stadium since resigning as the team's defensive coordinator to become the Panthers coach last season."Coach Fox has been here a long time," Minter said. "He made a stand here and a statement as a defensive coordinator. Any time a coach comes back, you want to go out and play hard for him and get a win for him."The Panthers (2-0) didn't have an easy time in the 24 hours leading up to the game. They landed in New Jersey on Thursday night and walked into the biggest blackout in U.S. history. The team's hotel in Teaneck was without power until 11:30 p.m. EDT."We had some food," Minter said. "I don't know how they were cooking it, but they were cooking it. It was pretty rough. But that shows the focus of this football team and shows we have a great coach to keep us focused like that."Chris Weinke, who hit 6 of 7 passes for 76 yards and led the Panthers on an 85-yard TD drive to start the second half, said Fox made a point of saying the blackout was a distraction."He told us there are going to be distractions and adversity and how you handle it builds character," Weinke said. "I think we came out tonight after laying around a hotel all day without an A.C. and performed well."John Kasay added field goals of 22 and 31 yards in a 13-point second quarter, and Rod Smart scored on a 1-yard run early in the third quarter as the Panthers sent the Giants to their second straight preseason loss.Kerry Collins, who fumbled on Minter's touchdown after being hit on a blitz, threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to fullback Jim Finn. Mike Hollis added 34-yard field goal for the Giants, who failed to get a first down in the second half with Jesse Palmer at quarterback."I wouldn't say we're on course, but we improved and that's what we were looking for," Giants receiver Amani Toomer said. "We still need to pick up."Outspoken tight end Jeremy Shockey left the game in the first half after bruising his ribs. He dropped two passes on the opening drive and finished with one catch for 8 yards. X-rays were negative, coach Jim Fassel said. The game's biggest play was made by Panthers linebacker Will Witherspoon. He beat tight end Marcellus Rivers on a blitz and hit Collins as he was throwing. Minter caught the ball in the air and wasn't touched on his touchdown run for a 10-3 lead with 11:10 to play in the second quarter."It was a heck of a play by Will," Minter said. "He got outside the blocker. He hit the guy and the ball was floating in the air. It was a gift from God, so I had to grab it."Collins, 11-of-19 for 127 yards, tied it with 3:38 left in the second quarter by completing all six of his passes on a 75-yard drive.Jake Delhomme and Weinke, battling Rodney Peete for the Panthers' quarterback job, gave Carolina the lead with consecutive scoring drives.Kasay kicked a 31-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the first half after Delhomme engineered a 10-play, 59-yard march that featured a 24-yard pass to Ricky Proehl.Weinke drove Carolina 85 yards in 13 plays to open the second half with Smart scoring. The march was kept alive when Fox asked for a review after a third-down catch by Walter Young was ruled out of bounds. It was overturned.Collins also engineered a 13-play, 67-yard drive on the opening series that Hollis capped with his 34-yard field goal.Kasay tied it early in the second quarter on a short drive that was set up by a good punt by Todd Sauerbrun and a 15-yard run by Stephen Davis.Giants defensive end Michael Strahan missed his second straight game with a broken toe. Starting safety Shaun Williams (shoulder) also was sidelined.Carolina also was missing two starters -- linebacker Mark Fields and receiver Steve Smith.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Just when the Green Bay Packers got defensive leader Gilbert Brown back on the field, they lost the man Brett Favre calls the heart and soul of their offense.

Pro Bowl right guard Marco Rivera sprained his left knee in Green Bay's 20-7 loss to Carolina on Saturday night when Panthers defensive tackle Kris Jenkins rolled up on him from behind in the first quarter.Rivera sprained his medial collateral ligament and will have an MRI on Sunday, coach Mike Sherman said."When Brett's standing over him and telling him to get up and he doesn't move, you think, 'Oh, man," center Mike Flanagan said.Sherman said it might not be as bad as first feared."When I talked to the doctors, there is a chance he could be ready for the (opener), believe it or not," Sherman said. "But there's a chance he won't be, either."As for Brown, Sherman gave him a passing grade after the super-sized nose tackle helped stuff Stephen Davis four times on a goal-line stand in his first test to see if he'll be able to play with a ruptured right biceps."It certainly seemed like he did his job from my vantage point on the sideline," Sherman said.Brown, who played one quarter, wasn't going to jump to conclusions."It's still a little sore," he said. "But we all expected that. We'll see how it feels tomorrow."Carolina (3-0) got outstanding performances from backup Chris Weinke and Walter Young, who hooked up five times for 88 yards, including an 11-yard go-ahead touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.Weinke was 8-of-10 passes for 107 yards. The Packers (2-2) also lost safety Darren Sharper (groin), but he said it wasn't serious. Carolina's most serious injuries were to defensive end Michael Rucker (sprained left ankle) and free safety Deon Grant (left quadriceps strain).Brown wants to play through his injury rather than undergo season-ending surgery even though he's risking permanent loss of strength in the arm.Brown, a 10-year veteran and fan favorite, got a rousing ovation from the record crowd of 69,831 at the renovated Lambeau Field when he dumped Davis for a 1-yard loss on Carolina's first possession, then did his trademark "gravedigger" celebration.Brown didn't take a cortisone shot or wear a brace because he wanted to be able to fully test the muscle, which he ruptured on a freak play two weeks ago at Atlanta."Man, he was out there fighting," Sharper said. "To play with a torn biceps shows the true heart and guts that he has. He's playing with one arm and still fighting through double teams. That was tremendous."Ahman Green rushed 12 times for 77 yards, his last carry a 45-yard scamper for a touchdown that put Green Bay ahead 7-3 in the third quarter."That was good to see," Favre said. "But I would have liked to see things click a bit better."The defenses dominated the first half, which ended in a scoreless tie after Green Bay fullback William Henderson's holding penalty negated Ryan Longwell's 47-yard field goal with 28 seconds left.Henderson also fumbled away the ball on the Packers' first play from scrimmage. Favre threw two interceptions and Green Bay's seven first-half possessions ended in four punts and three turnovers.Carolina's starters didn't fair much better. After Davis failed to punch the ball in from the 1, the Panthers had four punts and an interception by Rodney Peete the rest of the half."It's always easier for the defense," Carolina cornerback Terry Cousin said. "Everything we do is read, react, attack. Offense, it takes some time for the guys to jell."Panthers coach John Fox blamed himself for Davis's failure to score the ball in from the 1."We could have kicked a field goal there, so we came away with nothing," Fox said. "I was disappointed we weren't able to punch it in from the half-yard line."After Favre guided Green Bay on its lone scoring drive, backups Doug Pederson and Craig Nall didn't complete a pass and Akili Smith was 3-for-12 for 20 yards and threw an interception in the closing minute that William Hampton returned 30 yards for a TD."Our second-half offense was terrible," Sherman said. "They couldn't crack an egg out there."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- There was no celebrating after the Carolina Panthers closed the preseason a perfect 4-0. Assistant coach Sam Mills learned Friday he has cancer, a shocking blow right before their game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mills, Carolina's linebackers coach, found out hours before the Friday night preseason finale that he has cancer of the small intestine. He still sat in the coaches' box during the Panthers' 21-14 victory over Pittsburgh, a game in which his defensive players admittedly struggled with their emotions.Earlier this month, linebacker Mark Fields was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease."We were really flat and the news from Sam was a curveball for us," linebacker Will Witherspoon said. "It's really tough to swallow. First Mark, now Sam, it's sort of like, `What's next?"Mills did not address the team -- coach John Fox said Mills said he didn't want to be a distraction -- but his illness definitely affected Carolina's focus.Pittsburgh scored two touchdowns against the Panthers' highly respected first-team defense. Amos Zereoue scored on a 19-yard run and backup quarterback Charlie Batch threw a 3-yard TD pass to Matt Cushing."Sam's one of the greatest men in the locker room," safety Mike Minter said. "I can only speak for myself in that it definitely affected me. I didn't play well because of it and I was flat."Linebacker Dan Morgan, who broke his hand in the first quarter but played on, said the Panthers defense was horrible."We really embarrassed ourselves out there, and that has nothing to do with Sam," Morgan said. The Steelers were still pretty pleased with their early play, regardless of what excuses Carolina had.Playing behind an offensive line it considers to be one of the best in the league, the Steelers (1-3) reached the end zone on Zereoue's 19-yard touchdown run on their second possession."The offensive line really played well," quarterback Tommy Maddox said. "They looked like they were really in sync with each other. The backs ran hard, the receivers played well and it was good to get off to a fast start like that."The Steelers also got a TD from their second team, when Batch led a 99-yard drive that ended with his touchdown pass to Cushing for a 14-0 lead. The drive was highlighted with a 49-yard pass from Batch to Chris Doering on a flea flicker.Zereoue ran for 33 yards on five carries, Batch went 8-for-11 for 104 yards, Maddox, the starter, was 4-for-5 for 65 yards on two possessions and Doering had three catches for 59 yards.Clark Haggans had two sacks for the Steelers."I really liked the play of both of the first teams," coach Bill Cowher said. "I really like the mindset of the team right now."The Panthers liked the play of all three of their quarterbacks after finally giving the backups a good hard look.Chris Weinke was decent in his first shot against a legitimate defense, and Jake Delhomme directed all three of Carolina's scoring drives. Either way, Rodney Peete is probably still the opening-day starter."I don't think Rodney did anything to lose the job," Delhomme said. He finished a perfect 11-for-11 for 123 yards.Peete, who played just the one possession, hooked up with Muhsin Muhammad for three passes for 31 yards before the drive stalled out. He finished 4-for-5 for 31 yards. Then Weinke, the third-string quarterback all preseason, took over. Playing against a first-team defense for the first time, he wasn't able to effectively move the offense and was sacked by Kendrell Bell for a 7-yard loss that ended Carolina's possession. He fared better against the Steelers' second- and third-team defenses, and ended the night 11-for-16 for 120 yards.

Yea and the third game, Peete through a pick and got sacked and failed to lead the team to a touchdown, Jake played bad, but not as poorly as Peete while Weinke played against the third stringers and did well.

In the last game Peete played a series and played horrible, followed by a string of touchdowns by Delhomme while Jake went 11-11 with 2 touchdowns.

Delhomme was still didn't throw a pick, completed a higher percentage of his passes and more touchdowns..... While leading multiple touchdown drives, Peete didn't throw a single touchdown in 4 preseason games. lol

Now after posting and reading all this.

1. Chris Wenkie should have been the starter.

2. Jake only played well in the last preseason game and we all know the last preseason game means nothing.

3. Do you have any links to stories about Jake at TC?? Which I remember Jake not being very good at Practice.

4. Still doesn't change the fact that some very good  players aren't great "practice players"

Like this guy

Cam+Newton+Carolina+Panthers+v+Baltimore

who rarely has a good preseason.

Wenkie played horrible the only time he touched the field against better then third stringers while Jake discounting the third game still didn't throw a horrible interception and still outplayed Peete.

You posted the links.

It shows that Jake didn't do anything until the 4th preseason game. Even then Wenkie started that game.

From your links Wenkie had better numbers in more games then Jake.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
