OL who have been cut thus far.

Only issue with Scott is position.

He's a guard, and a starting quality one. They have Wharton and - once he comes back from injury - Silatolu. If they're comfortable with that, they may not pursue Scott.

Likewise, I'd like to see them pursue Dennis Roland. But if they're okay with Byron Bell...

They can still get Scott and put Wharton at RT. Our 2 weakest links on the line would be instantly upgraded.

Won't be Danny Watkins.  The Dolphins picked him up.

Tony Pashos signed with the Raiders and Michael Bamiro is on the Eagles practice squad (and was more of a project/future type anyway).

Jake Scott and Dennis Roland are still out there, but teams might be waiting till after week one to look at them.

You guys realize why our O line sucks right? fuging Hurney paying Kalil 9 million a year. Its ridiculous he's one of the highest paid O lineman in the league when other elite lineman make 2-3 million a year. This takes away 6 or 7 million a year that we could be paying to elite Guards and Tackles. Hopefully Gettleman convinces him to take a huge pay cut after this season so we can more evenly distribute the money among our O line

Danny Watkins agent says "not so fast"...

Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley

Just asked Joe Panos, Danny Watkins' agent, if he had signed with the Dolphins. "Not true. I'm his agent. I think I would know."

It'll probably still happen, but hasn't yet.

Update: Per PFT, it actually did happen, but somehow he used his old agent instead of his current one

Weird story there.

Hurney handed out many bad contracts.  DeAngelo,  JStew,  Beason,  Kalil,  Godfrey,  etc.  Virtually all of the big money deals he handed out the past few years have proven to be huge mistakes.  JR once said Hurney would be his GM for as long as he owned the team.  Hurney had to screw up in colossal fashion to lose his job.  He did.

Not quite correct.

From an article at the time of his signing (link)

The Carolina Panthers continued their surprising spending spree Friday when they signed center Ryan Kalil to a six-year contract worth $49 million that will make him the highest-paid center in the NFL, according to team and league sources.

Kalil was scheduled to make $10.1 million in 2011 as the team's designated franchise player and signed a five-year extension through 2016 that was restructured to lower his salary-cap number this year, sources said.

In tying up Ryan Kalil, Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has followed through on the promise to be aggressive this season, writes NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas.

The deal includes $28 million in guaranteed money, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Kalil will make $30.75 million in the first three years, or an average of $10.25 million, even though the salary cap number will be lower than that.

Nick Mangold of the Jets became the league's highest-paid center last August when he signed an extension that was valued at $54.075 million over seven years for an average of $7.725 million a season. Kalil's deal would have to average around $8 million a year to top Mangold's contract.

Kalil signed the contract before Friday night's kickoff in Miami and the Panthers were expected to announce the deal, sources said.

Kalil's overall contract value was actually less than Mangold's, but his annual average was higher.  Not by all that much though, far from a 'huge disparity'.

Fast forward to February of this year...

Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com reports that Kalil and the Panthers have agreed to reshape his deal ahead of the start of free agency. Kalil was set to make $4.75 million in 2013, but he converted four million of that toward a $5 million signing bonus. The move slashes Kalil’s cap figure from $8.6 million to $6.4 million and he remains under contract through the 2016 season.

As I said, not quite correct.

I'll add that while I'm not one to defend Marty Hurney, Kalil got paid like one of the best linemen in the league because he is one of the best linemen in the league.

And as far as 'evenly distributing' money along the OL, find me examples of teams where the left tackle or the center doesn't make more money than the other spots.

San Fran

Take a look at the 49er's spotrac page here. It will make you sick just to see how their top 5 (probably top 3) O-line is getting paid.

This year, their line is only being paid $14.6M while Gross($9.4M/yr avg) and Kalil ($8.2M/yr avg) add up to $11.3M. They have their LT ($4.6M/yr avg) and their RT ($5.6M/yr avg) locked up all the way to 2019 and trying to sign their LG to a similar contract.

I'm just saying we've paid & plan on paying cornerstone linemen ~$10M while the 49ers are getting elite/high quality linemen across the bored and not even tapping above $6M/yr average over the contract. Less guaranteed money too.
