game safety

So i was listening to the game on the radio last night. I guess the panthers media do the broadcasting???

any ways...   There was a comment made that the kickoff was going away..   well in my opinion it already has. hell 80% go out the back of the endzone.     and then you get the news about the $750mil  settlement for concussions...

Im just interested in hearing peoples general opinions on the saftey of the game.. what they can do to improve it, and how much do you think the game will change in the next 10 years.

i have my own version on a "low impact" kickoff return in my head that should lessen the speed and still be interesting to watch,  but i doubt it will come to  needing that.

bored at work conversation piece...

its one of those things where people see a way to easy money... obviously everyone knows the risk...

BUT that said.. i do think we need to find a way to keep the speed of the game high WITH enough safety to prevent TBIs.    I think that could be accomplished mainly through better equipment, and some of the rules already in place..

I like the waiver idea, but it wont hold up in court.. they will say they were coerced into signing it blah blah blah.

Seriously you get paid millions to play fuging football there has to be some sort of repercussion I want to watch NFL football not this sissy ass powder puff crap that they got going on now if they keep pussifying the game I really hope NFL fans as a whole take a stand and protest buying tickets to games and etc

For a good listen on these issues, check out Robert Smith's (former Vikings RB) take on Mike and Mike this morning. He was pissed about the lawsuit settlement and again, as many other former players have said, that players know and accept the inherent risks associated with the game.

IMO, If Goodell would quit being a pussy and just let players play the game, we wouldn't have an issue. The only thing I see as an issue that has needed to be addressed is the use of PEDs which makes already superior athletes into supermutants capable of greater damage and then coaching the use of the helmet as a weapon out of the game. If they cleaned those two areas up and just let them play, the game would be much better situated going forward.

It's a fine line to walk between not wanting to see guys ruined later in life and not wanting to see the NFL turned into flag football.

I feel for the older, concussion addled, generation of player who was pushed into playing through brain trauma because people didn't know better (and later knew better but didn't care).  I also feel for the older generation of player who put themselves through something that would impact them forever without the salaries that come now.  But my sympathy kinda stops there.  At this point this career will make you rich if you're even marginally good at it (if you're bad at it and manage to stick around you're still earning a huge amount of money by normal people standards and you're still very well off if you're not a moron with your money and expect to live like an oil tycoon).

Personally I think we've gone far enough.  Catastrophic injuries are going to happen when grown men whose entire job is to be a physical specimen run into each other at full speed for a few hours a week.  It's very unfortunate but it's less common than people try to lead fans to believe and every time someone gets badly hurt it doesn't require a new rule to outlaw whatever injury they had.

The rules are getting bad enough already. You know the risk you take. Thats why some prefer to go the basketball route. Allen Iverson might have chose to play football if the risk of bodily/mental damage wasn't so high.

But kick returns bring a special spark to the game, besides, many would be without a job. STs are how some are noticed, its how they contribute and make the team. It would take SO much from the game. Hope it doesnt happen.

I thought it was gonna be about the safety last night too :-) Which was sick by the way

I just don't like the direction the league is going at all. I don't want to see anyone get hurt, but who are we kidding? This is a violent contact sport and that's one of the reasons why we I love it. The players know the risks when they took on the field since pop-warner. Part of me thinks it is a combination of ex-players trying to cash in on what is now a multi-billion dollar empire and/or a guy named Godell on a power-trip.

They say offense sells tickets, but I like watching great defenses. Imagine if today's rules were applied in the 70s. The games will last 5 hours because there will be a flag every 5 min

Well the biggest reason all this crap is hitting the NFL is simply because they have the deepest pockets in pro sports.  Everyone is constantly freaking out about head injuries and brain trauma, but concussions and head injuries are pretty rare in the NFL compared to muscle tears, knee and other joint injuries.

You don't hear about these sort of law suits with other vicious sports like boxing, MMA, or rugby.  It simply comes down to money.  The idiots who blew all their money (and I know, MANY players back before the 80's did not make enough to live off for the remainder of their lives, I'm looking at the guys like TO and Warren Sapp) see how much money the NFL has and is bitching for a method to get some of that back.  It's like the fast food protesters yesterday, they see McDonalds is a 6 billion dollar company so they decided to protest to get a 100% raise.
