10 Questions with Jake Delhomme

5. I think [Chargers head coach] Mike McCoy is a hidden gem. It was very evident in the one year that I didn’t have him as my QB coach in Carolina—2009—I sucked. There’s no other way to put it. He played the position, he understands it, and he’s going to bring a family atmosphere to the team, and believe me, that does wonders.

Ya know what I lament about that game as much as Jake's issues?

Friggin' John Fox stubbornly sticking with his 'left and right corner' philosophy when he should have put Chris Gamble in Larry Fitzgerald's hip pocket for the entire night.

That still ticks me off

Agreed about Gamble n the coverage. Abandoning the run totally after easily driving it down their throat first drive also was really awful. It was like the coaching staff said "ok, jake has just thrown his 3rd int...no way he gets another one! Pass again!!" Then I slam my drink to the ground and meltdown in front of the wife and daughter forever tramatizing them. #neverforget

I never understood that and it is what made me hate Fox forever.

That was the game when I was done w. Fox. Classic mind numbing John Fox $h1t. We forgot our identity. It is like "Hey, forget what got us this far and what just got us an easy opening drive TD (a backfield that produced almost 2500 yards, 28TDs and more than 5.5 yards/carry) and decide to ride the arm of a QB who has been mediocre at best all season. You can't knock Fox on loyalty, but you are paid to do a job and the QB position needed to be upgraded...say....2006. May be Carr was supposed to be the upgrade who knows with Hurney/Fox

If it wasn't for John Elway, I doubt Payton Manning will have free rein there in Denver. I even doubt he lands in Denver at all. Fox will have Jeff George handing off to McGahee if he had his way

I was at a party in Carolina Beach that night surrounded by a bunch of other Panther's fans.  I can safely say that is the only game I have ever stopped watching before it was over.  I went to go play cornhole and all I could hear from the people watching was "you gotta be kidding me" and "this is awful".  What a terrible game...

**edit**

I still have absolutely nothing but love and respect for Jake, despite his last years with the Panthers.

This

Jake was essentially done after the Tommy John surgery. Even in 2008 I thought he had quite a few bad games that were masked because we were winning with a monster running game. Love Jake, but I'm not sure McCoy had much to do with his regression

Go back and watch his mechanics- it was obvious. It was more obvious it didn't help.

As for the surgery- his arm was better after the surgery. He didn't know how to control the improved strength. Combine that with the mechanical tweaks and mental deficiencies he went downhill fast.

His delivery got longer and he tried to third higher in his motion. It sucked.
