Fans are so flippent to write these guys off as easily replaceable. These guys are top tier running backs and either one "when  healthy" could be dominant with a good o-line. With that being said Im not sure Stew has played as many games as he has missed. It was utterly stupid to give him an enormous contract with his track record for injuries. But Hurney also gave a declining Delhomme a huge contract after playing one of the worse games of his career.

Unfortuantely Hurney has set us back a few years with these ridiculous contracts and right now we are feeling the effects big time, we need to replace 3 of our o-line guys with legitimate starters and have zero money to do it with.

I can see cutting Stew after this year if he doesn't play at all and eating the money. It would be better to do so if he can't heal up. Deangelo on the other hand if he stays healthy is worth keeping. He has already restructured so we are not getting as bad of a deal as before.

You are not going to replace either with some scrub and expect them to perform on the same level, especially with our o-line.

To me, it has to be about how you cut the pie (salary cap).  I think an average back behind a great line can be great, and I think a great back behind an average OL is average.  We need to beef up the OL and keep studs up there.

If I were a GM, I would not have a RB (AP excluded) on a second contract.

Contracts are a problem with the two but lets not act like we could throw anyone back there and get the same production, i would agree with that if we had an o line like the 49ers but we don't were far from horrible but far from good. Its been said a million times j stew and d will still can play but you won't see 08,09 stats from them in our new system but that doesn't mean we shouldn't look for cheaper options, hell if Rivera's not here next year our next coach might change the offense to where were a run first team again who knows let's get a couple games in before we decide.

Seriously, those fans who think we can draft any RB, utilize him and expect a 1,200 yard season are full of it. Let me reiterate, we don't have a 49ers type of line (took 3-4 years to build) nor do we have Mike Shanahan running our offense. I'm laughing even harder at the prediction that F-Zero will be a feature back.

Nick Goings went for 100 yard games over and over. All you need is a OL and you get rushing yards. You might not get 80 yard highlight plays but if you have a line you get ground production unless you just insert garbage

I hate to break it to you guys but lets look at how Gettleman has addressed the RB situation so far.

1. Extended Deangelo. While it lowered the cap hit for this year it makes cutting him next year retarded as the price to do so just got inflated by a good bit from the extension and added Bonus money as part of the restructure. If we were going to cut him next year then no point in touching his contract this year.

2. Picked up the 4th year option on Tolbert at 3.425 Million.

and finally Stewarts contract is soo fuging messy it may be the worst Hurney has ever done. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/jonathan-stewart/  ...Just check out the link you'll see why he's going to be here next year and probably in 2015 as well.

I remember the celebration thread after Stewart got that contract.  SMH.  Thankfully, the huddle collective has gotten a smidgen smarter because a lot of people who were for the contract are using the same arguments that were already made against the contract.

Fans had the right to celebrate J-Stew being locked up for years. Did Hurney overpay him? That depends on how you viewed Stewart as a franchise player (which he is in my opinion). If J-Stew comes back and has a 800-900 yard season this year (assuming the o-line will at least be average) and a 1K yard season in 2014, then I don't see the problem. Stewie has the potential to be a Top 3 RB.

Considering he just paid Williams it made it a comically overpaid backfield. Can't just look at one deal in a vacuum.

Let's not forget a few years ago when our line was actually respectable, Mike Goodson actually rushed for 100+ yards on more than one occasion as an injury fill-in for Williams and Stewart. That alone was a good indication that Double Trouble was a short-term luxury and not the long-term necessity that many of our fanbase and Hurney made them out to be.
