I actually think Gettleman has been trying to find a way to keep both Williams and Stewart, and I think the reason is because it's what Rivera wants.

Depending on how this season plays out, Gettleman may or may not agree that keeping them is the best way to go.

(he may also feel differently about keeping Rivera)

that's not how I perceived these moves..  at times it seems Stew is more coveted than DWill and Tolbert has also been restructured.  3 variables that have nothing in common really except for cap management.

I was one of the people who really thought we had to get double trouble locked down because they were an important part of the team. Now it's sad to say but they just aren't worth it anymore. Sure D-Will will have a good game now and then but for the most part he never even gets past the line of scrimmage and J-Stew is injured most of the time. I'm completely fine with moving ahead with Barner and Tolbert or Barner and some other veteran.

same boat here.

my thinking, tho, was that with a rookie/green QB (regardless of who that was going to be), it was important to have a great run game to lean on and what better run game can you have than one led by 28 & 34?

as it turns out, tho, they weren't as vital to cam's start as i thought they would be. they aren't as good as they used to be. the role they fill could very well be filled by other players on the roster without much, if any, steps backward taken.

the biggest thing is the albatross hanging on the team's neck, which is their contracts. they aren't coming close to earning it. i doubt they could earn it. it's suffocating and it's keeping the team from pursuing help elsewhere.

Williams has was demoted in 2011 (snaps) and 2012 (flat out demoted to #2).....yet you think Rivera is just begging DG to find a way to keep him?

Also the first Rivera move was bringing in Tolbert. To steal carries form guys that already couldn't get enough

I am curious, what makes you think RR wants John Fox's RBs? He isn't even using them and doesn't even prefer Williams if he has options healthy

Who's been the top back of the two lately (say, from midseason last year forward)?

Add in the contract restructures as well, and Rivera and the team's comments at the time those were done.

People lets take in mind the past two seasons the read otion was our base offense and deangelo didnt have no where to go but in the middle as opposed to using his greatest feature the cut back. Its not Dwills fault that he has had a bad two years. Its the offwnsive scheme we have been running wasnt fitting him and his style. D-Will will have alot to prove this year since Stew is on PUP and he will be the only featured back for us really. That means more touches and when he has more touches the game comes to him and he racks up yards. RB's have to get in a groove of the game and running the read otion only fit Cam and Stew because Stew is a Power up the gut RB where as Dwill likes the outside. Give Dwill this year to write him off. but Im pretty sure he will prove people he is the same good RB he was a couple years ago.

Can't cut'em, can't trade'em, may as well try to use them.

While speculation is wonderful, and hindsight is always perfect, the fact is, what's done is done (sorry for the abysmal grammar).

I hope Stewart is able to play this year, and I hope DWill goes bananas this year (in a good way).  I hope that our running game gets back on track (voodoo anyone?), and we keep Cam upright.

I wouldn't write Williams or Stewart off yet.  Williams has benefited from not being the feature back, and having someone to spell him a lot so he hasn't worn down.  Stewart is always hurt, it's like the wetness of water.  Yet somehow in seasons past he's been able to play well through the injury.  Now I don't think that's possible right now given where we are (Now that would be some Gettle-magic if Stewart suited up and played well (voodoo???)) in the preseason.  There is some room for hope.

Then again, this is a fascinating topic, with some memorable responses.  I'd love to be an optimist who was right!  But ultimately, with the cap ramifications, #34 and 28 will be here a while yet.  A long while yet, for better or worse!

Read option hasn't been our base offense for 2 seasons. More like 4 games of 32.

I can't believe it took almost 8 pages before someone explained why we can't trade or cut Stewart.  I always find it amazing how people think we can trade any player like he's Hershal Walker and we've got the Vikings on the line.

Best we can hope for is that he's gets healthy and is a best for us.  The other end is it's another Beason situation and he hardly plays for two years then takes a small paycut to help out the team.

do d-will/j-stew homers still think that it's 2008? both are good people, but they just aren't that effective anymore. double trouble is dead.

Williams isn't a good enough back to overcome bad blocking (granted, not many are).

Stewart is better behind bad blocking, but can't stay healthy.

And in both cases, the contracts exceed performance.

Oy :(

All that said, I'm not writing either guy off just yet. It is legitimately hard to judge a back behind a bad line. Who knows what they could do with a line that could block worth something?

Fans are so flippent to write these guys off as easily replaceable. These guys are top tier running backs and either one "when  healthy" could be dominant with a good o-line. With that being said Im not sure Stew has played as many games as he has missed. It was utterly stupid to give him an enormous contract with his track record for injuries. But Hurney also gave a declining Delhomme a huge contract after playing one of the worse games of his career.

Unfortuantely Hurney has set us back a few years with these ridiculous contracts and right now we are feeling the effects big time, we need to replace 3 of our o-line guys with legitimate starters and have zero money to do it with.

I can see cutting Stew after this year if he doesn't play at all and eating the money. It would be better to do so if he can't heal up. Deangelo on the other hand if he stays healthy is worth keeping. He has already restructured so we are not getting as bad of a deal as before.

You are not going to replace either with some scrub and expect them to perform on the same level, especially with our o-line.
