Which scares you the most the OL or Shula calling plays?

When you look at his body of work Shula scare me. I know things will look different in preseason but how will they be different is the question?  

 

To me he exposed our OL in preseason versus masking it.

in the preseason game with the Eagles near the end of the game, we had the ball on about the 8 yd line. There was about 4 minutes left in the game and we were down 5 points. shula calls for a run up the middle for no gain.

 

Why, in any kind of competition, would you not let your players compete. With nothing to lose and everything to gain in attitude and experience?.These are the youngsters on the bubble trying to show out. I do not like that kinda loser attitude from a coach.It's like he is saying, if I lose by by only 5 points it won't look so bad on me rather than letting these 3rd stringers take a chance.

I tthink the OL will be better than advertised.   Wharton has experience, so he will not make the mental mistakes Silatolu was making.  Shula, on the other hand, never had the weapons to much more than run the ball up the middle  at Tampa and Bama.

 

We were without our best blocking RBs the entire preseason. We were constantly changing the OL personnel.  The offense was very vanilla.

 

The D-II Guard experiment is probably going to last until about 2014 or 2015.  I thought Kugbila was a stupid pick, but I figured we must have had a reason.  We still do not know.

 

So, to answer your question, I think both Shula and the OL will gradually improve.  However, I am not going to judge Shula on what he did 14 years ago with a limited team at the QB and WR positions.  Nor am I criticizing the offensive protection until I see Wharton, Tolbert, and the total arsenal.

About the vanilla offense--

Seattle thrives on defense.  That first game is very important to this team.  Seattle was new last year--QB, etc. , and we are new this year (Shula).  I have a feeling that we did not want to give them film to watch. 

 

I think we feel that winning the Seattle game is going to propel this team into the mindset we need to win 10 games.  I think they are putting a lot of stock into Game 1.

Wait, wasn't everyone just saying they are trying to showcase Clausen for a trade. Seems like a great situation to do that in. Yet a run up the gut? Weird. Its almost like thats just his preferred strategy and silly excuses are not valid.

There are lots of people who believe Shula is the worst play caller in the history of playcallers from his stints in Tampa and Alabama.   It's basically Chudzinski's playbook.  So if Cam says Shula understands what plays he likes to run and feels comfortable with him, then I think we will be ok. Also if you read between the lines from Steve Smith, Cams, Deangelo's, etc comments you see that the all felt like Chud was the reason for the slow offensive start last year.  So I believe OL is the greatest fear.

Because you do not want opposing defensive coordinators to know your 2 minute drill/ plays when the season starts.

Good point about Clausen.  Is he worried that we might look as if we were running up the score?  Give him a stage and lets see what he can do.  Is his mindset going to be the same, however, in the first game vs. Seattle?

 

I hope Jeff Davidson did not leave his playbook behind or his philosophical wall hangings in the office.  I hope that some of what Chud did rubbed off.  I mean, we did better when our offense was more conventional at the end of the season, but our schedule was weak then--we played some of the worst defenses in the NFL during that stretch.
