Handling of a Franchise Quarterback

Good Stuff guys.

This hasn't morphed into a cesspool of name calling, as it's been recently the closer we draw near the season and disagree.

Instead, it's just points, facts, history, reasoned opinion, and perspective, following up more facts, history, reasoned opinion and perspective. So we're all learning and benefiting.

Great!  :thumbsu:  Lol

that was my hope when i started this thread!

i understand when people say that the d was in shambles at that time and we have built to shore that up. But to me nothing is more important than your QB. i think it is a lot easier to fix a defense than a offense.

I'd agree.

An offense is timing, chemistry, teamwork, cooperation, etc. And while defense includes those elements as well, I think talent can compensate more for deficiencies on the defensive side of the ball.

As the saying goes, it's more difficult to create than to destroy.

To your point earlier, looking forward we will basically have to rebuild our offense from the ground up. Which kinda sucks in your QB's 4th and 5th years.

I honestly think our franchise/brain trust didnt know how to handle a QB of Cam's caliber. We have never had one of his abilities before.

I think there were a lot of things Marty Hurney didn't know how to handle.  Admission of that fact essentially got him his walking papers.

To be fair, Newton isn't the first young franchise QB to come to a crappy team (most of them do) but you could rightly say he's two years behind where others might be at this point because his first two years were spent under a GM that should have been fired along with the prior coach.

And yeah, that sucks :(

They are debating right now on WFNZ if Cam is even a franchise QB yet. I contend that he is and that we need to do more to support his side of the ball.

They need to debate why people are still seriously debating!

But honestly, our team needed a lot of work. We had a whole in the dline. Now its solidified. LB, solidified (including backups). DB, serviceable (with solid dline/LB core). WR serviceable. RB, good. O-line.......meh. (we shall see) KR/PR, electric. (Haven't had that in a while) No, I don't believe we have handled it as well as we could have, but remember guys, the season hasn't started yet. We could still make a move.

Side note: Our defense will help the offense as well. Bad D makes games harder on the offense no matter how good they are. I like that we are building this D. I just believe we got started late.

note this too, when it comes to the point of us providing Cam with a "running game". in 2011, we ranked 3rd in rushing with 2408 yards, Cam had 706 rushing yards that year. w/o his yards we drop from 3rd to 21st.

in 2012, we ranked 9th in rushing with 2088 yards, Cam had 741 yards, w/o his yards we go from 9th to 30th. OUCH!!!

So in essence since drafted Cam has been our passing game and our running game.

Good points.

In reality, if the Panthers garner 4000+ yards of passing, and 2000+ yards of running, as they did in 2011, and almost again in 2012, they'll take it.

The difference being; most of Cam's yards will come on broken, or select plays if he repeats that total (think long gains or big chunks). And/or, it will be Williams, Barner and Tolbert, taking 200 or so yards away from Cam, and adding it to their total.

Oh man, this could be a book but....

The first issue was Hurney going around resigning his "core".

He did 2 things right to help Cam. Resign Kalil and Trade for Greg Olsen, this gave Cam stability at the Center spot and a TE to rely on.

Shockey was signed as well, but I can't remember if that was before or after we drafted Cam.

The DWill contract hurt Cam twice. It took away valuable cap and it cost us a possible 3rd or 4th comp pick, a pick where we could have grabbed an OLineman or Playmaker to develop.

The Kicker That Shall Not Be Named contract was horrible and he cost us games AND cost cap.

Beason, CJ, Godfrey deals were meant to support the D.

The issue grew worse in the draft along with Cam. We took 1 WR (Pilares) who was really a Special Team guy and late round OLine that didn't pan out at all.. Adams has been released and Amini is...developing. Fua and McClain could be the worst 2 non-trade picks Hurney made, it was horrible, especially looking back at what could have been (which I frown upon but for this thread we will play along). Also, the Edwards trade cost us chances at playmakers.

Turn the Williams/Kicker/Beason/Godfrey money into a young promising guard, a Pierre Garcon or Vincent Jackson, or even a RT and things look a lot better from 2010

Instead of Edwards: WR Torrey Smith, WR Randal Cobb, OT Orlando Franklin

Instead of McClain: RB Ridley, RB Demaro Murray, Etc

Instead of Fua/Hogan: Cameron Jordan TE, Etc

Instead of Pilares: Marcus Cannon G (thats a strech, but point remains.

Our 2011 draft wasn't dedicated to helping Cam Newton, Hurney was still in "We can WINS!" mode when he should of have been in "Lets restock the fridge" mode.

It wasn't much better in 2012, but at least that draft wasn't a complete and total cluster fug after the 1st pick like 2011.

2013 was Gett's first draft. I believe he walked into the GM office, looked at some contracts and murrmered "WTF" at least 100 times a day.

2009, 2010 and 2011 drafts were absolute dog poo for this team, excluding a couple hits obviously.

The best of the Bunch is Cam, Hardy and Lafell. a Franchise QB, a DE we developed, and a Career #2 WR.

Out of 24 players drafted in those 3 years, 16 are no longer with the team. Of the 8 that remain, Cam and Hardy are the only playmakers. 4 of the 8 are starters (Captain shouldn't be but WTFever) and the other 4 are JAGs.

Forgot to mention Luke or is he not a play maker?

This team already had a good running game. They improved the tight end position, and have been trying to improve the receiver position.

We have a pretty decent oline, unfortunately injuries have kept it from coming together.

So I don't agree with the OP at all.

Cam has weapons and an offense arround him.
