Handling of a Franchise Quarterback

Isn't that kind of my point? If we have a top 10 offense but a bad defense shouldn't we be focusing on our defense and special teams to become more well rounded instead of relying solely on the offense to make or break us?

I guess my point is...

Even the elite QBs....have a more consisant foundation around them.  We are a top 10 O b/c Cam is an anomoly.  If Cam had a better OL for example he could help the D.  Instead of it being an inconsistant big play moment from Cam......we could help him out and that helps the D as well

How much information do you really think you could have gained about how Gettleman would handle this year's draft based on looking at Marty Hurney's drafts?

If you want to talk about how things were done that got us to where we are now, then yes, discussion of team moves under Hurney applies.

If you want to talk about what happens in the future - which was my take - then it's pretty much utterly meaningless.

The discussion topic - as I see it - is primarily about how the franchise will be handling Newton from here on out.  How does Hurney apply to that?

Should fans know the history of the team?  Sure, but a full on examination of everything Marty Hurney did during his time in charge tells you pretty much zero about how Dave Gettleman's going to run things.

actually this was more of a discussion based off how we view the handling of Cam so far.

The point in having a good defense, is to try to give the offense more opportunities, quicker and more often.  I think upgrading the defense was a little easier to do this year, given how the draft went(all those OL taken off the board quick).  No one thought our 4th round pick was a good selection and hindsight is always 20/20 about who we could have drafted, but unless our staff surprises us, we aren't a playoff team again this year.  It's unfortunate, because one of our all time franchise players has less and less years remaining, and like many have mentioned, once Smith and Gross are gone, we all of a sudden absolutely have zilch on offense outside of Cam, Kalil and Olsen.

Fair enough, but I'd ask again how relevant anything Hurney did is to what happens now.

To me, it's kind of like bringing up John Fox in a discussion of current coaching.

Hurney's relationship to Newton would be 1) he drafted him and 2) he was his GM for one full season and a few games of a second. That's pretty much it for me.

They built him a good offense 2 seasons ago, and now while they were trying to fix the defense so that the team can win some games, the offense became mediocre.

Freakin preseason holy hell you all act like we're 10 games into the season. Do you think Josh Freeman will go 6/16 in the regular season and Kirk Cousins is going to start every game? And the Patriots are going to get beat by 5 scores? Yeah right. We are going to be just fugging fine as long as Shula can strategize. The plays are there, they have been called strategically to counter anything yet so we just don't know!

Year 1 w/ Cam: Smitty, LaFell, 2 TE's in a system that loves to use TE's + the assumption of getting Gettis back plus our 2 Rb's. That sounds sufficient

Year 2 w/ Cam: Everything except we downgraded our TE set with Barnidge + assumed yet again we'd get Gettis back, added Murphy, yet again with our 2 Rb's. Again sounds sufficient.

Year 3 w/ Cam: Gettis appears to get in the mix, so does AE; Hixon added (yeah he's made of glass but he was added with the hopes of making that #3) so on so forth

I mean I dunno man, it's not elite weapons but they are weapons none the less. Luck got drafted a lot of weapons, but I'm not sure they were elite more than they were a mass quantity hoping something would stick.

Like someone mentioned before, we might need to consider 2 OL's in the first 3-4 rounds. However what sort of sets progress back is the need to draft an LT to replace Gross. It mitigates the addition to our OL because we are losing that LT already. T, WR, CB, S, TE, G are all needs coming up (front 7 is fine)

It's either way. We help Cam he helps the defense. We help Keek, he helps the offense. We chose to help the defense first. If we chose to help the offense first, don't you think people would be talking about this in reverse?

the point is this is going to take at least 2 years where we can feel confident about our team's playoff chances year in and year out if we draft the right way and get our Cap under control.

It sucks for Cam but rebuilding the defense first was our best way to win now rather than later.

Good Stuff guys.

This hasn't morphed into a cesspool of name calling, as it's been recently the closer we draw near the season and disagree.

Instead, it's just points, facts, history, reasoned opinion, and perspective, following up more facts, history, reasoned opinion and perspective. So we're all learning and benefiting.

Great!  :thumbsu:  Lol
