Handling of a Franchise Quarterback

Instead of spreading out the picks in this past draft on offense and defense I believe they did the right thing by fixing the weakness of the interior defensive line. With this fixed they can now work on the offensive line in the next draft. Think of it this way, if you were fighting a fire you wouldn't splash water on one section and then move on to another without first making sure it was put out.

Last season we were 9th in TDs per drive despite being 28th in average starting field position.

We were 9th in least amount of turnovers per drive.

We were 9th in red zone TD percentage

We were 6th in 3rd down conversion percentage

We were 10th in avoiding three and outs.

Point being, our offense hasn't been the issue, and we have plenty of players around Cam Newton to be successful.

Oh man, this could be a book but....

The first issue was Hurney going around resigning his "core".

He did 2 things right to help Cam. Resign Kalil and Trade for Greg Olsen, this gave Cam stability at the Center spot and a TE to rely on.

Shockey was signed as well, but I can't remember if that was before or after we drafted Cam.

The DWill contract hurt Cam twice. It took away valuable cap and it cost us a possible 3rd or 4th comp pick, a pick where we could have grabbed an OLineman or Playmaker to develop.

The Kicker That Shall Not Be Named contract was horrible and he cost us games AND cost cap.

Beason, CJ, Godfrey deals were meant to support the D.

The issue grew worse in the draft along with Cam. We took 1  WR (Pilares) who was really a Special Team guy and late round OLine that didn't pan out at all..  Adams has been released and Amini is...developing.  Fua and McClain could be the worst 2 non-trade picks Hurney made, it was horrible, especially looking back at what could have been (which I frown upon but for this thread we will play along). Also, the Edwards trade cost us chances at playmakers.

Turn the Williams/Kicker/Beason/Godfrey money into a young promising guard, a Pierre Garcon or Vincent Jackson, or even a RT and things look a lot better from 2010

Instead of Edwards: WR Torrey Smith, WR Randal Cobb, OT Orlando Franklin

Instead of McClain: RB Ridley, RB Demaro Murray, Etc

Instead of Fua/Hogan: Cameron Jordan TE, Etc

Instead of Pilares: Marcus Cannon G (thats a strech, but point remains.

Our 2011 draft wasn't dedicated to helping Cam Newton,  Hurney was still in "We can WINS!" mode when he should of have been in "Lets restock the fridge" mode.

It wasn't much better in 2012, but at least that draft wasn't a complete and total cluster fug after the 1st pick like 2011.

2013 was Gett's first draft. I believe he walked into the GM office, looked at some contracts and murrmered "WTF" at least 100 times a day.

2009, 2010 and 2011 drafts were absolute dog poo for this team, excluding a couple hits obviously.

The best of the Bunch is Cam, Hardy and Lafell. a Franchise QB, a DE we developed, and a Career #2 WR.

Out of 24 players drafted in those 3 years, 16 are no longer with the team.  Of the 8 that remain, Cam and Hardy are the only playmakers.  4 of the 8 are starters (Captain shouldn't be but WTFever) and the other 4 are JAGs.

Great review. Thanks

And don't forget to add Luke Kuechly (I'm sure it was on oversight).

Hurney, thought he could win during the 2011 draft, after finishing in last place, and drafting a rookie QB? Wow!

It's funny; so many Huddler's seem to think 'Da D" is going to be automatic this year. I'm just not convinced, and will wait and see.

Both the offense and Defense may surprise this year (in divergent ways). And I really hope the defense can learn to hold a lead for a change/Christ Sakes.

yep, Ravens game has giving people too much confidence.

You have to realize, offensively the Ravens are the EXACT type O we are built to defend and perform well against.  They, like us, have an offensive scheme built around a vertical pass attack.  That means our DL gets a chance to take over.

Issue is all teams we will face don't run vertical pass schemes and won't give our DL lots of opportunities.

They are debating right now on WFNZ if Cam is even a franchise QB yet. I contend that he is and that we need to do more to support his side of the ball.

HE absolutly is, the Panthers have just been to assfug stupid to build around the guy. It our "hands off" owner would stop fuging around behind the scenes and let his "guys" walk, that would be a nice start...

Yeah we haven't helped him the way we should.  I almost feel like Gettleman sees this season as a wash and was getting defensive players, probably expects to axe Rivera, hire his own coach, and go offense next season.  I hope not though.

Gettleman is doing what Hurney should have done, sign cheap players to cheap deals and start building the team from the middle. I can only believe he would have done tons more for the OL if he had the cap space.

i hope offense is the priority next year, but look at the hole we've dug.

gross and wharton are only signed for this year and unless they are re-signed that leaves kalil as the only OL worth a crap.

and steve smith is the only WR under contract for next year.

so we are essentially left with kalil, silatolu, kugbilla, bell, and garry williams (i suppose) on the OL and steve smith as the WR. that's a whole lot of holes to fill.

Bell is a RFA  and Williams will be gone. Our starting Lineup for the OL in 2014-15 looks like something out of a nightmare.

its a shame too, because we are now behind in helping him develop. this is year 3 for Cam and we havent got him a solid line and a real #2 wr or a consistent running game not involving him.

Lafell is fine as a #2, but would be better as a #3. OL and WR have to be addressed and addressed heavily going forward.

Keek was a great pick. Honestly, I could argue that the Luke Kuechly pick was the pick hurney made that gave the most help to Cam Newton and that is really really sad.

You realize all those are all heavily Newton driven stats...

As a franchise, we have jumped on his back.  98% of QBs bust doing what we are doing.  Somehow Cam has done well yet we just add more weight.

Our offense has been inconsistant and that has been an issue....when Cam ain't on fire, there is no help to help us get going.

I've missed ranting so...

Basically the Carolina Panthers drafted one of the most "Sky's the Limit" QB prospects in recent history, gave him the ball as a rookie and said "Uhhh go run around and throw the ball and stuff, but don't expect any help from us" and continued to do it.

I can only pray Gett's piles up the offensive weapons next offseason, b/c if he doesn't we will be in the same situation we are looking to be headed into now.

Our O would've been waaay better if we weren't having to drive 80+ yards to score. This makes the Ginn signing huge!

Offensive stats being driven by the QB position is true for about 95% of the football world.  Consider that the teams that were 1,2, and 3 in TDs per drive were QBed by Brady, Brees, and Peyton Manning in that order.

We have good offensive skill players.  We do need O-line help.  That will go a long ways to helping D-Will and Co.

We can always get better, but our defense needed more help than our offense, which is why we have focused on drafting for defense these last couple of drafts.

I think our weapons are adequate for a franchise qb. The oline is clearly not. Of course I'd like an upgrade at the #2 wr spot, but we have an excellent pass catching te, a do it all #1(clearly need an heir), and good competition for the #3 with several options that look like they have potential. In the backfield we have a plethora of running and pass catching options (when healthy). More could have been done and the line is clearly not going to cut it the way it's played so far, but Cam has enough weapons to be effective as long as the oline can hold up.

with the present state of our OL and secondary....and future cap situation.  Not sure if we can even risk going all in on weapons.

Our OL next year may be Kalil.  Just Kalil.  Then hope and well wishes about DII Gs and finding 2 new Ts.

    • I agree.  I think Belicheick or someone said you cut players a year early. Meaning you don't wait until they start to decline. 1 you get pieces if you trade or two you don't have pay out the wazzoo and then regret once Father Time comes knocking.  It's a cold business
    • Probably wont be a popular opinion give the obsession people have with receivers, but the Dolphins would be a better team if they resigned Hunt instead of Waddle.
