Handling of a Franchise Quarterback

IMO there are a couple different ways to do it.

1: Sit him down for a while, learn the game, and then come in and start after a year or so.  Not as many teams doing this these days, Kaep and Rivers were done this way, Brees for that matter as well.

2. Start him day one and surround him with talent as best you can.  Through the draft, resigning O players, and bringing in FA's that work within the type O that your QB is best suited for.   Ask them to throw, try to win games, and learn from mistakes and INT's.  Manning and Luck jump to mind when taking this route.

3. Don't ask them to do too much, build a suffocating D, have a good O line and decent RB and not put the weight of the World on their shoulders.  Big Ben jumps to mind here.

I think that we have tried to do number 2, but have not been that good at it, almost like we started that way, and now are trying to pull a number 3 or something.

A lot of this poo goes back to changing coaches, and GM's, but not at the same time....as should have been done.  When Cam was drafted I was a fan of sitting him, as I didn't want to ruin him, and wanted to build the team a bit before throwing him out there.  That is probably the wrong call, but honestly, it wouldn't have mattered, as we still aren't in the playoffs.

being able to stay just barely under the cap and not have winning seasons means you are failing miserably at your job of putting together a winning team.

Totally agree.  If we were 32 million under the cap and dropping 7-9 seasons, I would have had a lot more respect for Hurney.

I had been beating the drum to kick his ass to the curb for years.

Should have left with Fox, and we would be in a much better place already.

One of the biggest misconceptions on this board that is frequently parroted is that Hurney was a good cap manager. Some would even say he was great. But in my opinion, when your team finishes 6-10 to 8-8 most seasons and it's because you've got serious holes at like 4 or 5 positions, and you can't address them all because your projected to be 7 mil over the cap by the time free agency starts so you have to restructure 4 player contracts just to get under there, you're not a good cap manager.

Hurney's gone but his ghost still haunts us in the form of overpaying contracts to damaged goods or declining players and it likely will affect Gettleman's ability to stock the team with talent for the next few years unless he's so ridiculously good at managing the cap that he can clear this mess up in short order, which I have some confidence that it is possible.

I would think even those folks who think Hurney was a great manager would have to say that Gettleman must be a better one.  He has done a great job renegotiating contracts and signing guys to reasonable contracts.  The thing that doomed Hurney is really helping Gettleman. Hurney gave those huge contracts after the new CBA was signed expecting the cap to go way up with the new TV contract. Because that was wrong information and it has been flat and will be through at least 2014, it has forced a ton of free agents to take much less and sign 1 year deals.

What will help Cam is a 25-30 carry/game durable bruiser RB that can get 3, 4 and 5 yards on tap. Since about 2 years ago, my wish has always been to use Stew as a feature back and trade DeAngelo, but Stew can't stay on the field. Because of that reason, I think we need to trade Stew while we still can. If we were to do it the other way, I just don't see d-will as a workhorse type of back. If we need Williams to carry the ball 25-30 times a game, he needs to have a monster oline in front of him like 2008 and 2009. Our current O-line may get someone killed and go to jail soon :-) I think locking up two RBs two large contracts was a big mistake. We now need to do make a decision with our expensive backfield that produced only for 2 seasons. I think we need a bruiser that doesn't need a good line to average 4 yards/carry. Then sit back and watch Cam take over the league

I also think we should have Kept Shockey. He was such a safetynet for Cam and would have helped more in Cam's development.

As far as O-line...I think everything that needed to be said has been said

This in all honesty probably has more to do with the where we are and how we have handle our qb than anything. stability in a organization is key for a young qb. look at the top teams, stable organizations that do it right. because of not getting rid of the gm and coach at the same time. we have another lame duck season with a coach. if he fails cam will have to start all over again with a new staff and new offense.

They are debating right now on WFNZ if Cam is even a franchise QB yet. I contend that he is and that we need to do more to support his side of the ball.

How long did it take for Peyton, Brady, and Aaron actually proved that they were even qualified to be Francished QBs? This is what is ruining this sport. Today's sports folks seem to push certain players to be like a darn Madden game Avatar, while others are given a chance to grown into a Franchise QB position.

Eli Manning took a number of years.

You morons are amusing.

DT was by far the worst position on this team, and next to QB it is arguably the most important position in football. Gentleman was able to steal the two best DTs in the entire draft, one of whom very well may end up the overall best player in the entire draft.

He also upgraded our horrible STs. He brought in several veterans who are special teams aces and signed arguably the most dangerous return man in football.

Dave was a genius in restructuring so many contracts. I've never seen a GM in any sport fix a cap by moving that many contracts in one year. And he's not done yet as he is working to lock up Hardy.

If Gettleman had drafted a WR, OT, & OG with our top 3 picks y'all would be bitching and crying saying he is a dumb ass and should've drafted a DT.

"fuging idiot GM! He should've drafted all defense and patched the OL with a cheap vet like Wharton! Offense would be fine till next year! We are doomed!"

That's my opinion, and one that I was voicing yesterday.

I think that we will make a change at the end of the season (barring playoffs) and put a full coaching staff together that DG want's to keep long term.

This season will tell us a lot.  If Cam steps up (appears that he is doing so) and DG likes what he sees, I could see us signing him long term after next season, and bringing in players and coaches that fit his skill set.

At that point we would still be in the infancy of Cams career and we will have a rudder on this ship.

Of course you disagree with my analogy since if flies in the face of what you said.  It doesn't make it any less true.  We aren't looking at different things, you are trying to skew the facts to fit your beliefs instead of looking at the facts and letting that inform your opinion.

I told you before your analogy we were looking at things differently.  That is why your analogy applies to your perspective.
