Kugbila to IR

Those of you that don't think this RG position was mishandled are lemmings. Kugbila was supposed to be learning behind Hangartner. Now neither are on the 2013 roster. RG was an obvious weakness. Our QB struggles when pressured from the right side. Kug could have been picked up as an UDFA and we could have used the 4th pick to get a contributor.

The draft is obviously not an exact science but we seem to always make it harder than it needs to be.

Gettleman has done a lot of good things in his short time here so far. I'm willing to forgive his one questionable decision. If his worst blunder is the occasional late round whiff, I'm ok with that.

I don't think you can call a fourth round pick a "late round whiff," especially when it's only your third pick in the draft. When you've got a very small draft class, they shouldn't have been looking for "projects" with their third pick; the fourth round was their last chance to pick up an immediate contributor, even a solid backup. They bungled it, and picked up a project, that in all likelihood, Rivera won't even be around long enough to see develop, and worse still, one that I'd be willing to bet my left AND right nut would have been available in the UDFA market.

When they made that pick, they basically announced, "We've got 2 DTs, and that's the only position we're going to upgrade. We're done with this draft. Good Night."

I hated this pick from the moment I saw the only game tape on him looked like it was shot on 8mm.

Yeah, as of right now, it was a bad pick. I'm not disputing that.

At one point during the draft, Gettleman said that he liked certain players that Coach didn't feel fit his system. For all we know, RR fell in love with Kug and Gettleman gave Ron enough rope to hang himself.

I still trust Gettleman's judgement at this point.

It's a definite possibility. But, I can't imagine Kug was RR's pick.  This is his make-or-break year.  I really don't think he would have reached on a project if he's got a 50-50 shot at best of keeping his job come January. If Ron is a halfway decent coach with a semi-functional brain (giving him a huge benefit of the doubt here) he would have taken someone who would step in and increase the likelihood of getting W's this year. Again, that's projecting a large amount of competency on him (See Fua).

To be frank, I really haven't been bowled over by the Gettlemagic yet. FAs have been marginal at best (although I still think Ginn was a home run). Outside of Star, I think there were big missteps in the draft. I even think Short was a pretty big error. It's hard to ding him, because he's going to be a solid, solid DT for many years with us. But we got our stud DT in the 1st, and then still had glaring holes in WR, S, and OT/OG. I think the second should have been spent there. Then Kug, in the 4th. He redeemed himself with Klein and Barner in the late rounds. But unless Gettlemania brings in a solid fix for our O-Line in the next 7 days, I'm going to be very underwhelmed by his short tenure.

Yeah, I guess we'll never know who lobbied hard for Kug, cause you're right, Rivera being on the hot seat, he shouldn't be drafting projects. I just assumed it was Ron, because the pick reeked of Amini, which was Ron's choice.

Kugs was definitely Rivera's pick.  With all the smart moves Gettlemen has been putting down, I seriously doubt he had much to do with this pick here.  Gettlemen wasn't here when we reached for Amini.  So the common denominator here is Rivera and his crew of scouts when we pick a no name guy from a no name college. (My posts have been sounding cruel as of late.  It must be getting close for the season to start.)

He said that specifically about the last 2 picks (5 & 6). Rewatched him talking about the draft picks and he said "Kugbil has a lot of upside and is instinctive". So I would lean towards him being a DG pick.

Yeah he's missing a year, but I think everyone would agree we hope he turns out to be at minimum good depth (at max a starter) next year. I'm rooting for him at least.

I liked all the other picks but the Kugbila pick was terrible no matter how you look at it. Even some of the best looking prospects have ended up as busts and who knows how this guy will turn out but the draft is a calculated risk and you don't build championship teams by making these type of moves. Gettleman is still operating with the scouting department that Hurney put together, hopefully he'll have some time to evaluate everyone, bring in better guys where needed and we won't have any of these horribly bad head scratcher type picks in the future.

For anyone defending the pick, I'm hearing the same old tired arguments that people would use to defend Hurney when he would do something idiotic. GMs make dumb moves from time to time, it happens. Nothing wrong with calling it what it is. No reason to blindly defend everything they do.

I don't see anybody blindly defending anybody. The guy hasn't gotten on the field for a preseason game and has been IRed. How is that even remotely a blunder for the GM. How is he suppose to know that this guy would be injured.

We don't know if it is a blunder until we see him on the field. Or he never takes the field for the next 2 years.
