Hardy extension in the works

What year would it be possible to cut CJ without taking on much dead money?

If it was possible to sign Hardy to a fair deal with lower money the first couple years while we still have CJ, and then get rid of CJ and have Hardy, Alexander, and someone else as our future, I think that would be the best option.

Next year we could make him a June 1st cut and save 8.5 mil

I trust Gettleman not to overpay.

I don't recall who it is, but Getts stated he's not the numbers/cap guy in the FO. If someone knows throw it out there. That being said I know he has great input and did help reconstruct players, but I recall Getts mentioning the "cap guy" had a long term plan that he agreed with. This might come down to whoever handles that gives Getts the budget range to sign Hardy.

Could be wrong, would have to go back and look at what Getts said in the past to confirm any of this

The cap guy is Rodgers, but I'm sure he gets his marching orders from Gettleman.

not sure why he would sign an extension. if he has a another big year (which he certainly thinks he can and expects) than he would command much more money imo.

He also knows he's an injury away from losing a shitload of guaranteed money.

Like who? DE is a premium position along with QB and LT.

We already have one Premium DE.  IF we sign Hardy to a extension, then Cam next year we will be in cap hell.  Then you have Luke coming up behind them.  Keep either Johnson or Hardy but we cant afford both.

I understand the cap ramifications and consequences, BUT the NFL has become a passing league. On defense, you must defend the pass first. Hardy helps with his flexibility in the passing game. He is also very good against the run. As much as we loved Stewart and Williams when they were producing, running the ball in the NFL can be done with cheaper pieces. Not so with rushing the passes.

If we do let Hardy walk, are we 100 percent sure that Alexander can become a starting DE? Or that we can locate another quality pass rusher in the draft (that pans out)?

Thankfully that decision is not my responsibility! It's a tough one!

You dont plan for or expect an injury.

Its like not driving because your scared you will get in a wreck.

He would be stupid to sign for anything other than a big long term contract.
