Preseason Panic In Pantherland.

An entire article that is written about what people should not think.  If the preseason is nothing, why play 4 games?

Also, this is basically a paraphrase of one of the arguments in favor of an 18 game season, the counter to which is that 4 preseason games allows for a good balance between letting the starters get used to game speed and evaluating the talent for the lower roster, neither of which determine who goes to the Superbowl.

The good thing is that this team has a trend for lowering expectations before the beginning of the regular season. The bad news though is that we have a consistently established trend for starting off regular seasons like sh*t even before Rivera.

Just saying.

Maybe that lowers expectations even more.

Offense was consistantly bad in the 2011 and 2012 preseasons.....

Those are also the two greatest offensive production seasons in franchise history. All comes down to the OL. If they can be some what not crappy....we will be okay

here's the thing, the O-line scares me, and Shula's track record isnt good and the preseason has killed any optimism I may have had about that.

until otherwise proven wrong(which I am seriously hoping I am) I'm assuming the offense will be utter crap this season.

I can't believe it. I agree with you whole heartedly.

In 11 preseason, Cam was a bust/project that would take years to develope.(Best Rookie Season by a QB ever, and offense was top 10)

In 12 preseason, the offense was burdened by no #2 receiver and would be crippled without Shockey. (Continued offensive success, Olsen did well in Shocks absence and Cam was Cam)

Now 13 preseason and our line is garbage, Cam looks bad, we can't run and Shula doesn't know what he's doing. (Dont know yet but I'm beginning to sense a trend)

Do people not understand what preseason games are actually meant to do and help.  Weed out people that can't cut it and have our starters work on things that they have trouble with.  Cam has been a pocket passer this preseason to work on his weakness, short 15-20 yard throws in the pocket not rolling out.  Working on the things that will make him better.  This Off will be fine for sure and our Def will be good but not great.  We have a play two other big passing teams in our division ATL and Crapoleans....they will put up numbers on us 2 x each so our numbers will be a little skewed when you look at the overall season.  We will be fine for sure.  2-1 going into bye week no more no less.

First off; welcome to the huddle. And thanks for the reasoned post.

You mean, 2-7 yard passes (dump offs, screens, check downs), or slants?

Cause Cam can throw the 15-20 yard pass (does it quite regularly during games). And he can certainly throw it, with out rolling out. Cam rarely rolls out by the way, unless it's a broken play, so far in this offense.

Maybe that will change?

Thursday's game is to determine who makes the practice squad, basically.

I have a formula that should make everyone happy.

Play 2 preseason games

Play 1 foreign soil game (used only as a tiebreaker)

Play 16 regular season games

The foreign soil game: (Goodell would cream over this)  There are 4 sites in other countries and each host 4 games per year.  London, Toronto, Tokyo, and Sydney, for example.  4 games would build up a fan base but not saturate the market.   Every year, a team must play one game in another country.  The team gets a second bye (before or after the game) in addition to the one they already have.  The foreign game is not counted on the records, but is used as a tie breaker should it come down to it. Coaches could use it however they choose. Coaches would have the option of pulling starters or playing them--a gamble either way.  Practice squad players would be activated for this game only, expanding rosters to 61 players for this event.

While owners would complain about lost revenues due to a lost preseason game, it would be evened out by the increase in television revenues in these countries, merchandise sales (would go directly to teams), and half of the gate. Season ticket holders would have to buy a ticket to only 1 preseason game instead of 2. The NFL gets exposure in 4 other countries, building a market abroad. Playoff and Super Bowl ratings would actually increase world wide too.

Maybe this is not perfect, but it is better than a month of preseason games.

Do you know how tired players would be from going around the world like that? When soccer players take trips like that, they go a couple of weeks in advance to right themselves for the time zone, the climate, etc. it would be a nightmare on their bodies.
