Panthers sign Wharton

He was above average at one point. He was not in 2011, many folks wanted his head at the end of the year due to him under-performing his cap number. He is a huge upgrade over the guys that we have on the roster now who are lucky to still be in the NFL.

That's fine with me. Injury could explain his drop off in 2011 so here's hoping he returns to form. And like you said pretty much anyone is an upgrade at this point.

The issue that some had in 2011 was that he was a solid guard being paid like an elite guard. We were in cap trouble and his release solved a big part if that issue.

He is like Gamble. Very solid player just being paid like an elite one.

A few chicken mcnuggets of truth for you guys to swallow

- Wharton graded out below average according to PFF his last year here. His massive contract along with that is what made him a cut. He is also coming off an injury. He is also, however, still an upgrade, and this is still a good move.

- You guys arguing about the "nu uh Gettleman was teh weeener!" thing are dorks. Wharton held out and got more cash. This is not what was ideal for Gettleman. Edwards pulled a similar move earlier in the offseason when he hardballed Gettleman for more years than he wanted to give up and Gettleman caved. This is okay. It is not Gettleman's job to look cool for the fanbase so they can give him idiotic nicknames. it his job to improve the state of the team as much as possible. even if it means sacrificing a bit more thna he wanted. he "lost" this battle, and that is a-okay, because the team wins.

- this should not be our last OL move. last I checked we had one guy on the roster other than the starters who is an OT, and he was an UDFA playing on the other side of the ball last year. this move is a great start. but it should not be the end.

this was smart timing.  I think TW had a big price tag and I have no clue how it all went down but I assume his floor pricing dropped more and more as 3rd preseason games started wrapping up and the slicing and dicing began.

I could be completely wrong.  I have been joyously off the grid for the last 48 but I think DG is going to do wonders for this franchise.

Two years ago and almost every year under Hurney (some we even thought were good) we could safely strategize BPA because we needed help everywhere.  There were no "bad" first round picks.  Now for the first time in a long time (maybe ever) we can easily identify the 3-4 positions that desperately need help and even clearly prioritize two of those above the other two and most everyone would know exactly who we are talking about.  Not only that, he has created space to acquire FA's to shore up these spots, begun the acquisitions, and is still progressing in small but noticeable steps while maintaining flexibility and saving cash.  I think this guy really wants to make a splash.  He's been sucking hind *** and probably getting passed over, stashed, exploited for a long time in this biz.  (some call that paying dues)  I think we as Panther fans are going to be the beneficiaries.

It's nice to have a pro at the wheel again.

If you disagree, I don't care.  I choose blissful optimism and see no reason to doubt the man..... yet.

Not gonna lie, I wracked my brain trying to remember who the hell Gsmbke was and why I couldn't remember a player with such an odd name.

You know your oline sucks when you have to sign travelle wharton

Sent from my SCH-I545 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

Are you new here, or did the multiple "what are we doing about our o-line" threads not inform you that yes our o-line does suck?

I have not read this thread, so please forgive me if this thought is repeating someone else. I doubt it is repeating anything Teeray said, however, because this is kinda smart: (don't know why I took that cheap shot, but it felt good)

Travelle is step 1. He is depth on the left side of the line because he has never played on the right. When Silatolu went down and Williams nearly cost us a QB, Gettlemen hit Wharton's agent's phone number and arranged a meeting today.

Wharton can play behind Gross and he can play LG until Silatolu heals.

I still think the right side has not been addressed. Step 2 wlll be a Right side player. A RT who could play RG in a pinch is my guess. Personally, I would love a deal for Geoff Schwartz. They might take Joe Adams for him.

Schwartz is terrible! Hell to the no for him.

Wharton can be a plug in play at RG. We plugged him almost everywhere when he was here. IMO, I would love to move Amini to RG bc I think he's a better run blocker. Only problem is would you want him learning a new position?
