Panthers sign Wharton

Travelle Wharton has played well for us in the past, his last year here he was a player that needed to be upgraded. We currently do not have any NFL caliber guards on our roster, he is NFL caliber and therefore will now be an upgrade to what we have don't expect miracles folks.

Wharton was a weak link in the line and was cut because of his pay vs his production. He was a below average guard for us his last year here

Bell was by far the weakest link on that line....Wharton was just overpaid. His pass protection took a step back.

I disagree, can't say that Bell was balling and did not get called for a fare share of his patented face mask grabs, but Wharton allowed a lot of defenders to Cam. The LG spot was an open doorway for defenders in 2011.

Do you have any evidence of him being a weak link? Most people here are saying he is an above average guard.

He was above average at one point. He was not in 2011, many folks wanted his head at the end of the year due to him under-performing his cap number. He is a huge upgrade over the guys that we have on the roster now who are lucky to still be in the NFL.

So still above average, or even average with an injury set-back, just under-performed for what we aren't paying him now?

I never said he sucked or was cut only on performance. You jumped the gun and made baseless assumptions.

I'm not getting to engage in that. You've already been warned by Kurb in the past, so I'll leave it at that.

You said that being happy he was back was an indication of just how bad our OL has sucked. One would assume that you meant that we are so bad that having a subpar player that we cut back is a major improvement.

Nice try on trying to bait Kurb into this. I did not insult you. I just said that you should do a little research and then you would know what you were talking about in this situation.

Nice try trying to play the innocent little poster. I have read multiple threads on here today where you were in a pudding match with numerous other posters.

Most posters were not happy when Wharton was cut and that it was purely a cap play that we were forced to make due to another bad contract that Hurney signed.

Carry on.

I mean, if we're being intellectually honest and all - it's because of both reasons. His last year here he was below average, not terrible, but not good or even league average. He had a negative PFF rating for the whole year. It was of the fact that he wasn't very good, combined with being paid like a upper-middle tier lineman, that created the reason we cut him.

Sorry I don't know how to properly embed tweets, but the below tweet says Wharton graded positively in 2011 and finished the year playing very well. And yes, the data is from PFF.

Wharton had +3.3 rating at LG in '11. -7.9 in first 8 games, +11.2 in last 8. Got progressively better through the year. Didn't play in '12
— Justin Goad (@PFF_JustinGoad) August 25, 2013

I have not read this thread, so please forgive me if this thought is repeating someone else. I doubt it is repeating anything Teeray said, however, because this is kinda smart: (don't know why I took that cheap shot, but it felt good)

Travelle is step 1. He is depth on the left side of the line because he has never played on the right. When Silatolu went down and Williams nearly cost us a QB, Gettlemen hit Wharton's agent's phone number and arranged a meeting today.

Wharton can play behind Gross and he can play LG until Silatolu heals.

I still think the right side has not been addressed. Step 2 wlll be a Right side player. A RT who could play RG in a pinch is my guess. Personally, I would love a deal for Geoff Schwartz. They might take Joe Adams for him.
