I think it's more correct to say he has a consistency problem, but that has a lot to do with the type of QB he is.

Have said it before: Newton's never going to be a pinpoint accurate passer like Drew Brees or Tom Brady. Rather, like Brett Favre, he's going to tend toward a mix of "holy cow" and "what the $@&%". You'll see him within the same game make passes with laser accuracy followed up by passes that look like he threw with his eyes closed. Favre did it his entire career.

You can't coach that kind of thing out of a natural gunslinger. Nor should you try. That inner confidence that results in the occasional "oh no" is also what produces all those moments of "oh yeah".

Me? I'm okay with that.

Brett Favre and John Elway both got Super Bowl rings playing that way. Jake Delhomme came pretty darn close. You can win with a guy who's more daredevil than surgeon as long as you understand that's who he is and build your offense appropriately around him.

 

This is exactly how I feel about Newton.

 

I'm just hoping that he continues to improve decision making skills, and maybe with a better D he will.  Now he may not feel the weight of the whole game on his shoulders, and he won't be scared to throw it out of bounds and get off the field.

 

Either way, I'm happy with Cam, but we need to seriously get him some help at some point.

Longball throwers having issues in their short game is noting unusual.

 

That's why you don't put a quarterback like Newton in a West Coast Offense.  He's way better suited to a Coryell type attack like the panthers run.

 

On the flipside, guys like Jimmy Clausen and Colt mcCoy work way better in WCOs.

But [believe it or not] I've seen enough from Cam (ironically) during the first Tampa Bay game, and the last 8 games last year, that shows me, he can be a 63-67% passer with adequate protection. He doesn't need to be a 70+% "surgeon" type. 

 

If I remember correctly, he even started 2012 in the 70's/high 60's, before all hell broke loose with the OL, bad defense, and the Read Option nonsense, so no one remembers. 

 

He'll be fine (even for most picky Huddlers)  with time, good options, an OL, or scheme. 

 

It appears, Cam just needs the time/confidence (behind the LOS) to get into a rhythm.

All Thea guys on here are tall lol. I'm 6'3 and 225 so I'm not big enough. But y'all need to go to training camp next year haha. Couldn't be worse than what we got now ;)

I will just say this, it's a team sport and everything is interlocked with each other and one problem can be the source of another. Our entire offense could improve which includes Cam, as well as, many others. But, even if Cam is accurate it won't matter if he has no time to throw the ball or no one who can hold onto it. We focused a lot this past draft on our defense, which now looks good. I will be worried about Cam, after we use draft picks to improve the offense and he still doesn't perform.
