A Look at Basic Preseason Stats

Reveals some interesting stuff:

  • Cam is only completing 47.8% of his passes to this point in pre-season.  Obviously, that means nothing as we know starters hardly play the first two games and it's not like they're in for any amount of time to develop a rhythm.  I don't think he's ever had a great pre-season, so this one is pretty much pointless.
  • Parlaying that point into this one...  Brace yourseves:  JIMMY CLAUSEN IS OUR HIGHEST RATED PASSER.  He has a 70.4 QB Rating.  (Cam is currently sitting at 61.5, while DA is currently rating out at 67.9.)
  • ALL of our RBs are being held to less than 3.4 YPC.  I think this is indicative of horrible/inconsistent OL play.  I was actually surprised that Barner's was that low.  Surprisingly, he and DWill are both averaging UNDER 3.0 YPC at 2.8 and 2.9 YPC, respectively.  YUCK.
  • Gettis is AWESOME.
  • You have to wonder who our front office is bringing in to compete for the kicking spots with incumbents, and why?  Nortman is clearly the stronger and more consistent leg in the punting "competition."  Gay has a long punt of 48 yards, just for perspective.  Nortman still isn't wowing anyone with his net average, but he is clearly the better option.  As far as the kickers, anyone that has watched the games can see a clear difference in leg strength there as well.  On kickoffs alone, Gano is booting them out of the endzone everytime, while Lineberry is barely making it to the endzone.  Additionally, Lineberry has yet to attempt a FG beyond 29 yards.
  • Quick!  Name our leading tackler in pre-season to this point and...  GO!
Anderson Russell?  I knew that was your first guess.  I've been saying each game that this guy is going to take someone's spot, and this only adds more weight to that argument.  Yes, these are unofficial totals, but such is the beast of tackle tallying.  Anyone watching the games can see what a solid player this guy is and how quickly he should contribute on special teams.
  • Now, name the next two top tacklers of the pre-season to round out our top three.  Of course you were thinking Ryan Rau and Melvin White.  Again, tackles are an unofficial stat, but I think it's, at the very least, indicative of these guys being around the ball more than their peers - and those are the kind of guys that make a great supporting cast.  I don't know about Rau's chances of making the final roster, I'd imagine they aren't great, but I certainly think White has done enough to earn that final DB spot.

Nice review, but has Gettis even played with the first team yet? I thought all his catches were against nobody defenders, struggling to make a roster.

I'm not a Gettis hater, I'm just not on the wagon yet. I think tonight will be his test.

Anderson Russell will make the team. I dunno about White....

Nope, Gettis hasn't gotten any first-team reps, so with the injuries going into tonight, I'm looking forward to what he does as well.  I still think it's significant because many on here wrote him off after the injuries and acted as though he hadn't produced prior to them with subpar QBs as a rookie.  I'm sure the windows will get smaller for him on the first-team, but he's done it before, so I still expect great production.

And with White, if I'm not mistaken, he saw some action really early in the game last week, so I think his chances are good.
