This is why ill never go to Mexico

Maybe the war on drugs in the US isn't so bad afterall.

It's america's war on drugs that has turned Mexico into a country run by drug cartels.

The US' strict prohibition stance is what creates the black market that funds these cartels and drug gangs. Remove the market, by legitimizing the whole process (IE legal distribution and taxation) and you remove the problem.

I've long heard that the issues are spotty and the equivalent to bad cities in the U.S.  You just avoid the bad areas and you should be good.

For some reason, I've always been enamored by Mexico and have wanted to visit, or even possibly get a summer spot down there one day.  I love the history of the country...

That being said, I have heard almost as many stories of this sort as I have of the"it's safe" variety.  Those drug/rape stories are pretty scary, but if I ever went, I don't go to clubs so that wouldn't really be a worry.  But, I remember even when I was like 15, one of my friends went on a mission trip with our church and said they had a van pull up alongside of a group he was in trying to get the girls that were with them.  They ended up running and getting away somehow, but I thought that was pretty bold for someone to do when they were in a group in the first place.

I haven't been to Mexico in about 9 years. My wife went for a few weeks about 4 years ago. Juarez has some nice areas, but I wouldn't venture outside of the central area. I saw that some of the outskirts are patrolled by federales with American M16s and HMMVs. I didn't get to see a whole lot of Mexico City - but that place is amazing.

I took a bus from Mexico City to Acapulco. Some of the highways have incredible views of the mountains.

A friend of mine drove to and around Mexico a few years back. The only problems he had were from cops. They will harass cars with US license plates to no end - always looking for bribe money.

Drug cartels and human trafficking...

Setup a group of people to sneak across the border, take their money, cheaper to put bullets in their heads and dump them in a grave.

Of course you'll have the occasional cartel retribution against other cartels, police, government officials, and anyone thought to be a threat to the cartel...

Pretty much just like any other 3rd world/near 3rd world country.

Speaking as an American who is married to a lovely lady from Guadalajara.....she's now a dual citizen. :D

War on drugs is only a small part of the issue. On a primal level, I call it the powerful and corrupt feasting on the weak.

I go to Mexico almost every year and while Mexico's northern states and Mexico City are pretty bad, the infection is spreading to the central areas as well.

Headless bodies or the heads found on the street. Yep

Gangs or Cartels robbing a GDL city bus in broad daylight and executing anyone who doesn't get off and then burns the bus. Yep

Kidnappings for ransom. Yep. (my coworker's aunt was kidnapped in the middle of the day from her job and the family had to pay ransom) If you drive in the northern states, sometimes you can see bodies hung from overpasses of those who families didn't pay.

Kidnappings for no ransom. Yep. Big recent story in GDL is the kidnapping of a baby from the mother on the sidewalk. No ransom at all. Rumor is that the gangs must have a slave trade going now because there are less ransom demands now.

Had some family friends from Charlotte, who decided to rent a car while in Cancun in 2011 and drove to some ruins. Family got pulled over and robbed by the actual Policia. He paid, filed a report once he got back to Cancun and now will never travel to Mexico again.

Investigative reporter looking into the Cartels. You'll go missing.

New neighborhoods in and around GDL are walled, gated, and have 24 hr security (and we're talking about lower middle class).

I'm a little cocky, so I'll walk down to the local grocer or sometimes Walmart by myself (yep, I've walked inside more Mexico Walmarts more than US ones in the last 8 years). Overall it is safe, but you have to aware of your surroundings. Kinda like NY City in the 80s.

Honestly, I think Mexico should allow their citizens to own guns (we're venturing close to Tbox material.)

Mexico is a great place, I have had lots of fun in GDL, Manzanillo, Vallarta, & Mazamitla.

I apologize, I'm all over the place in my post.

btw....Mexico has a Voter ID card.

You're an idiot. The reason these cartels have come to power are because of our "war" on drugs. That was a dumb statement sir.

Just read floppins post. What he said you dumbass fox news watching fart.

Watch it with the personal attacks ASP.  Not in this forum.
