Avenged Sevenfold: Hail to the King

FFDP is pretty tight in concert. One of those bands that sounds surprisingly good live. I thought FFDP made an appearance at the 2012 Orion Festival in NJ, where Avenged was one of many bands, but I was mistaken.

Anyone here into Volbeat? Another very good live band.

I have defended this band for a long time, but it's getting harder and harder. Basically the whole album is a direct rip-off of several other bands.  Just listen to "This Means War" and then go listen to "Sad But True" from Metallica. Same fuging song.  "Doing Time" is essentially just a GnR song.

They have been stripping their songs down for years.  It has just gotten to the point where everything they do seems lazy and uninspired.  They write some basic rock/metal riff, come up with some moderately catchy melody, and then ship it out.  It seemed like Waking the Fallen and City of Evil were both albums where they really thought about each and every moment of the song.  Not anymore.

I just got around to downloading a couple tunes off the new yesterday. "This Means War" is a total rip of "Sad But True" and the other song I downloaded...and can't remember right now.... is a complete rip of "Enter Sandman."

Unfortunately, it is "Sad But True" that their originality is gone and they're already using some of the best riffs in rock history, all the while hoping nobody notices?

I just listened to This Means War and Sad But True (granted I've probably listened to this song over 100k times, but I wanted a fresh listen) and outside of some token similarities, I don't understand the "OMG THEY TOTALLY RIPPED IT OFF"

It's a similar sound, but the riff is not the same. This isn't like Ice Ice Baby and Under Pressure which you guys are making it out to be. A7X has always credited Metallica as having been one of their greatest influences so it's only natural that a large portion of their songs are going to have a very "metallica" feel. For the record, I feel that A7X is more versatile in their style than Metallica has ever been, and I'm a huge Metallica fan.

So... as we're driving home from Shallotte last nite, some jerk-off in a silver Dodge pickup pulls out of the Shell station right there at the 130/17 junction...right in front of me as I'm doing about 50... (speed limit 45). Dude has a brand new, overstuffed recliner, semi-wrapped in thin plastic, which is already flapping and shredding in the wind, in the back of the pickup... and it's upholstered in camo....

... good ol' Shallotte...

Anyway, I must respectfully disagree, Floppin. I, too, have been listening to Metallica for about 3 decades and, while I do like a good deal of A7X's catalog, there's no way I'm going to even put them in the same league as Metallica. If they start selling out huge festivals all over the world and doing shows like the Big 4 and build a rep for putting on epic concert tours, I might change my mind. But to take a band that's still in its infancy relative to Metallica and make the comparison is an insult to both bands.

Maybe you don't agree that A7X is of the same caliber as Metallica, but there can be little denying that A7X are a more versatile band.  I think it is very clear who the more versatile band is.

Depending on what you consider "versatility," perhaps. But I respect your take on it. In my opinion, versatility gets you what?

I mean, if you were to look at Metallica, which had a pretty nice following before the Black Album of 1991, they pretty much showed some versatility when they created a couple mainstream monster tunes off that album and gained themselves an even bigger fan base. But it also polarized a fan base perhaps more so than any other rock album released. The Metallica "purists" were not happy that shorter, more rock-oriented songs were written for the album and many of those fans are still living and dying by Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, etc and simply won't listen to anything else Metallica has released. But that's their collective loss.

What I can tell you is my personal taste, and with A7X I know that I either like a song or don't like, which is different than most music I listen to. I try to give everything a chance, even if I don't like it the first few times I hear it, unfortunately, with Avenged some of their stuff simply isn't coming around for me.

But, again, I try to stay away from influencing the listening habits of others.... there simply aren't that many 57 year old metal heads I can share my music tastes with... lol. To each his own.

I think creating a show tune, a country song, pop metal, bon jovi rock, and hard rock/heavy metal all on one album is just about as diverse as you get.  I don't think Metallica have ever approached that level of diversity.

I have no problem with Metallica.  I'm a fan of about 30% of their music, but I respect what they have done for the genre.  I think they are great in that sense.

The majority of Metallica's stuff after the Black album is crap compared to their earlier stuff.

As for Avenged Sevenfold's new album, I think it sounds pretty good.  I may actually buy it.

See? What did I tell ya about the Black album polarizing Metallica fans?

Interesting that you like A7X's new stuff when it bears a very strong resemblance to the post-Black album Metallica.

Actually I think A7X's new stuff is a lot better than anything Metallica did after Justice.  Just my opinion.  And I think the thing that really polarizes Metallica fans about the Black album is the commercial bent they started to take.  Really they started that with Justice, but at least that album was pretty damn good.

Also when a band changes their sound, of course the die hard fans are going to be against it, because it's the old sound that made them fans in the first place.
