Why do we have lack of "difference maker" talent at select areas? Lets look.

Best thing Gettleman has done so far is begin to shed bad contracts and get the team financially able to make some moves again.  Not sure about the talent he's brought in so far.  I have a feeling only one of the DT's he drafted will pan out, and I'm banking on Short over Star (just my opinion).

If the team is bad this year, it's all on Rivera.  No team with Cam Newton as their QB should start 2-8.

Gettlemans job is going to be much tougher next year than it was this year.

Player and 2014 cap hit.

Charles Johsnon : 15 million

Ryan Kalil            : 10.4 million

Greg Olsen          :7.4 million-

Charles Godfrey  :7.1 Million

Cam Newton       : 7 Million

Steve Smith        :7 Million

Jonathan Stewart :6.05 Million

Deangelo Willaims: 6 Million

Thomas Davis        :5.8 Million

Luke Kuechly         :3.4 Million

Star Lotulelei          :2.1 Million

Dwan Edwards       : 2 Million

Amini Silatolu         :1.3 Million

Kawann Short        :1.05 Million

Chase Blackburn   :1.05 Million

J.J Jansen              :980k

Totals just over 83 Million.

Dead money commited to the cap

8 Million from Beason

5.6 Million from Gross

2.8 Million from Anderson

670k  from Hangartner

Totals out right at 17 Million (Assuming we eat all 13.6 million at once from Beason and Gross)

Other notables with less than 700k cap hits

Frank Alexander

Joe Adams

Josh Thomas

Josh Norman

Kugibila

Nortman

Klein

Barner

Brandon Williams

Not sure what our total cap number for 2014 is, as spotrac.com seems to have removed that feature.

http://overthecap.com/teamcap.php?Team=Panthers&Year=2014 has us at  119.76 before the Beason and Gross' contracts void. If we eat them in the same year we'd save about 3 million from that number, if we split this across 2015 as well we'd save an addition 6.8.

A shame we have a great defensive HC....yet can't give him decent defensive talent to run a good D or OL talent.

there aren't nearly as many "must resigns" due to hit the market this year as Huddlers like to act like there is. I look at the list and Hardy is the only one I see that is essential to try and keep.

Happy Family Time No More escalates after this season.

Cam Newton...waiting on his deal wouldn't be smart. Before the 2014 starts he needs an extension

With 5th year option on his contract I wait a year and concern myself with Hardy and other needed free agents this offseason.

Why? Only thing that could happen is he could get much more expensive or if we suck he could debate the trend of this generation of athletes and dictate that he goes to play elsewhere.

Cam needs a new deal after this season or we are pointlessly playing with fire we don't need to.

We also need Addison and Alexander to step up....we don't need two DEs getting paid

I've seen you argue this point with a hundred people and am not going to get into it with you. Just a difference in approach. I'd operate from the belief that a few additional pieces could make us successful and ensure his stated commitment to stay, rather than operate out of the fear that we're terrible and make him wanna leave. Just my approach.

DE is a position worth paying for. If Alexander steps up then you make a decision on what to do with Hardy or Johnson based on their respective play. Not a decision that can be made right now.

All comes down to money....good deals mean you can build a well rounded team.

That is Carolina's issue. Bad deals means lots of holes filled by players who shouldn't be starting.

DE is a position worth paying....but a well rounded unit is better than being impressive at one spot. We need serious on investing into our secondary if we are ever going to have a good D.....our good D last year was smoke and mirrors and we ended up with a good yardage stat.

Cam Newton is a once in a 25 year type player....he needs an extension.

If Edwards, Hardy and Gettis all play/contribute this year and the Panthers go to the playoffs, I fully expect to see a similar post praising Hurney for his draft choices. After all, the "core" of the team this year are Hurney's guys.

We don't need to sign Cam to a long term deal after this season.  We will pay him the same now or a year from now. Look at Romo for example despite his lack of success in the playoffs he still got a boatload of money and so will Cam.  I can't think of a single quarterback that was in his prime that jumped to another team without being traded.  It doesn't happen.

Wait and see.  Gettleman is in no hurry to sign Newton to a long term deal.  He is under contract through 2014 and has a fifth year option for 2015.  Only a fool would sign him now when there is virtually no advantage to doing so.  Again, he will get a boat load now or later.  As long as franchise quarterbacks are scarce, they will get premium dollars.
