Why do we have lack of "difference maker" talent at select areas? Lets look.

After about the 3rd consecutive successful slant, it was evident that it was a perfect time for a TO to regroup the D. Even were we out of timeouts (I honestly don't remember), you have somebody "suffer from cramps" to give you a chance to regroup.

To just stand there and watch that unfold was a major mistake imo. Everyone could plainly see what was happening and what the outcome was going to be.

The little things separate great coaches from mediocre coaches.

Honestly I don't know what was said to Norman or why they didn't adjust.  I just have a hard time believing that a former defensive coordinator who has consistently produced top 5 defenses everywhere he has gone would just sit there and not do anything.  Clearly there was a problem but I figure that the blame has to be at least shared with the players.  That isn't to say Rivera or McDermott don't share the blame just that it isn't all their fault.

IMO he has.

Maybe a betterbquestion is why hasn't he taken better advantage of his oppritunities.

Armanti got/gets a chance every day of practice like everyone else. The coaches know their players far more than what we see on a Sunday. Players emerge onto the playing field only after they impress their coaches on the practice field.

Kurb, nice write up. I have had similar thoughts before about our draft history. I think JR might have a tendency to pay "his guy" as opposed to paying 10's of millions to some FA that he doesn't know on a personal level. I think JR meshes personal and business too far that at times it can be detrimental to roster decisions. Hopefully JR gives Gettlemagic a leash long enough to let him make some "purchases" in the FA market (and it could continue if it becomes successful). But idk, it's reading into it but JR definitely has a hand on how these past years have played out.

I always thought our woes were fairly straight forward. We had Jake, and as his skills declined so did our team. Hurney followed him up with Moore, the guy Fox groomed as Jake's replacement, and he was terrible and drug our team down. Hurney dumped him and drafted Pickles, who destroyed an entire season. In comes Cam and our team slowly begins to crawl out of the gutter, with expectations being .500 or better season. We have a decent core of players, and now we have a QB who has enough experience and talent to make a splash this season. Imo Hurney's biggest mistakes were Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen.

Not sure if serious...

Carolina Panthers: 17

QB: Cam Newton

RB: Dwill / Stewart

WR: Steve Smith / LaFell

TE: Olsen / Shockey

O-Line: Gross / Kalil / Wharton

D-Line: CJ / Hardy

LB: Anderson / Connor

DB: Gamble / Godfrey / Captain

ST: Mare / Baker (terrible/not included)

(Edge over SF: QB / WR / TE)

San Francisco 49ers: 23 (including Kicker/Punter)

QB: Alex Smith

RB: Gore

WR: Crabtree

TE: Davis / Walker

O-Line: Davis, Iupati, Staley, Goodwin

D-Line: Smith / Sopoaga / Jean Francois

LB: Bowman / Willis / Aldon / Brooks

DB: Brown / Rogers / Whitner/ Goldson / Culliver

ST: Akers / Lee

(Edge over Carolina: OL / DL / LB / DB/ ST)

First RB's are equal, having more doesn't make you better it just makes you cap stupid.

Gore/Williams/Stew can all do about the same, if all things are equal.

So we'll call that a push.

So by your own post we can see San Fran had a better OLine and Defense.

That pretty much finishes our discussion about them.

You get points for Denver, it is worth mentioning how bad Denver's division is.

I have two things to say about all of this.  And I'm in the mood to type, so the TL/DR message is that Hurney didn't totally suck, he wasn't ever great on his own, and we have the playmakers to be successful.

No Hurney didn't totally suck. His first rounders were mostly gold. When he did spend in FA it made sense despite some bumps along the way.  It was after the Zone meltdown that he lost his mind, very likely b/c of some of the reasons we have both mentioned.

I'm not one to defend Rivera's mistakes his first two seasons, honestly I wished we had moved on last season, unfair or not.

I think we have lots of the pieces, but not enough to be a Title contender. Smart Drafting, Smart FA, and Smart Coaching could have us there very quickly IMO.

I think there are a few coaches around the league who would make us look like a title contender right now, if not be one.

Lets wait until after this season to see if we are a contender this year.  You make it sound as if the season was over and we underperformed again. If Rivera and the team have a good year then all the complaining by you and others about last year is really moot.  If we underperform again, you won't have to worry about Rivera as the culprit moving forward.

I'm rooting for the team, and I think it would be great to discover that Rivera's light bulb has gone on and he's actually on his way to becoming one of the all-time greats.  But based on his performance to date, and the general trends in coaching during type b free agency, I find it difficult to build him up as if he already is.

I doubt he wants one.

Plus I have heard some unfortunate things about Hurney's personal life.

yeah, I don't think Hurney was fired and then he went looking for a new NFL job. I think when Hurney was fired JR and Hurney both new he was done in the NFL.....

If true Hurney, does have personal issues but I believe that Hurney fell on the sword for JR. Yes, Hurney made horrible contracts but he did so on a plan that IMO JR paved the road for.

Agree 100%

Hurney carried out orders he likely knew were stupid.

Yep.

Which is why I am hesitant about this Gettlemen hype. He has tweaked some painfully obvious contracts....that is all we really can say about him.

One draft doesn't say much....don't know yet what his habits will be there. Double down on DT I think can cause some curious questions.

My hesitation with DG is really a JR question. He fired his GM....then first thing he did was jump the gun and make himself the first actual call his new GM should of been part of. Now I am a RR fan so I would have been ticked if got fired but I think DG should of been in on it. Another example of how Jerry has kept the FO and coaching staff in recent years on different pages.....result is bad.

I think JR has more Jerry Jones in him than people think.....difference Jerry simply doesn't talk to anyone and is in a small market
