Let’s take a step back now. From 2005 to 2008, Smith played in 48 games (including playoffs) with Delhomme as quarterback, the equivalent of three full seasons. He caught 299 passes for 4,686 yards, averaged 101.3 yards per game from scrimmage, and scored 38 touchdowns. In other words, when not playing with quarterbacks so bad that they make Jake Delhomme look like Joe Montana, Smith was producing average numbers that would be career highs for just about every receiver not named Jerry Rice. And he did it on a run-first team.

My favorite all time Panther and I will die loving him. I almost cry reading this article. I don't know what I'd do once 89 is not on the field dress as a Carolina Panther. The game will be so different. I was a 13 years old kid watching 89 back in the good old days. I admire the man Steve Smith so much. Thank you so much for everything he gave to me and this franchise. I know the days are coming closer. I'm so afraid to imagine the future without this man. An All-Time Great, HOF or not. The kid from Califormia, the young player who was nothing but a returner, the guy who lighted up Ericsson/BOA Stadium, and the guy who grew into a man will always be a HOF in my eyes.

i can't imagine steve smith not being on the field.

no way he doesn't get a statue and his jersey retired. can you imagine some twirpy little rookie nerdbag bopping onto the field wearing 89? he'd get booed out of the solar system.
