Zone read rushes

Cam is not an NFL read option QB. I think he's too big and lacks the acceleration to run the read option in the NFL. How many times was he caught from behind by DEs, LBs and even DTs. Cam has long speed, which takes time to develop. Kap and RG3 can run away from most DEs and DTs in a few steps. Cam can run away from some, but not the more athletic ones.

Love Cam and he's an exceptional runner. But I've always been more impressed with that cannon on his right shoulder than his ability to run. I think the team is better served using him as a passer that can make plays with his legs when the play breaks down. And of course short yardage plays are a must for any QB his size and strength. Let the RBs be RBs and the QB be a QB.

Cam is probably the best read option QB in the NFL....

Only one built to be hit and last

Only one with RB caliber vision

RGIII IMO should have the zone read is almost a trick play....Cam is built and good enough where it can be used every week

Agree that Cam is definitely built to take contact.

But, most option QBs in college aren't built like him for a reason too. They are built more like RG3. The type of college QBs that come to the NFL and become WRs. RG3 and Kap have the athleticism to be WRs in the NFL. Cam does not. He's built more like a TE or DE. I just don't think he's quick enough to be an option QB in the NFL. Now, if the Panthers ran it once or twice a game, I think it'd be okay as it would catch defenses off guard. But if a defense prepares for the look and it comes when they expect it, I think teams with athletic linemen will give him a hard time.

aren't more built like RGIII bc guys built like him grow on trees....

There aren't a lot of Newton's running the read bc you would be hard pressed to name 3 QBs in college football history with a similar skill set and physical attributes.

Newton has run the read in the NFL better than anyone.....if you look at first down pickups and scores. No one is close in that regard. The homerun speed is nice....but Cam is getting the payoffs more than the other guys IMO.

Any offensive line would prefer to know whether its going to be a pass or a run so they can block properly. Their line is better than ours overall but even their great line is at more of a disadvantage when blocking without knowing whats going on behind them just as much as ours or any o-line in the league would be. Sure their talent level mask it better but its still not ideal way of blocking for any lineman.

Here's a simple way to think of it....

Pass blocking is all about creating pocket.

Run blocking is all about paving a path.

Zone read blocking is full of what the fug is going on behind me?? They don't know if the qb decided to hand it off, drop back and make a pass or run it himself. Meanwhile the D is just following the ball.

So yes we know the shortcomings of our o-line and there is no need to amplify this problem with play calling that makes it worse. Coaches have to be able to scheme around the weaknesses of their teams not make them worse.

The O-line doesn't care what is going on behind them. All they are thinking about is their blocking assignments. Knowing who is going to get the ball is not going to help them block anybody

Another idiotic statement, by the fact less 'Navy_football'.

I hope the lack of zone read is bc they are making their offense in pre season.

I know guys hate the zone read but it is what takes full advantage of Cam's skills. Now if there is a 2nd and 1 they just need to go straight I form and crush it.

If Shula reverts to his own conservative ways like run on every 1st down...every time or run after every pass then this season will be lost.

If he learned anything from Chud is that you have to innovate on offense but not get too cute on short yardage which Chud did too often. Taking chances and going for big plays stresses a defense bc it is a option as opposed to the Check down offense that never threatens.

So far this preseason the offense is playing as if Cam is Trent Dilfer and not a dynamic scorer getting him in open space for roll outs and such.

We shall see.

Ok little boy, unfortunately I don't have time to play your silly little game. But I could show you at least 2 replays of Cam getting tackled in the backfield running the option for every "positive" play you can find.

I said the man has long speed, but has trouble running the option against athletic defensive linemen because he needs time to accelerate. So, where on either of those videos does he run away from an athletic lineman/LB in the backfield on his heels? Or does he get an opportunity to get up his speed and make moves with some space? Grow up! We all love Cam Newton and want him to be successful as our QB for the next 20 years. But if you're gonna get pissy because I don't say he does everything better than everybody else, then well we'll continue to disagee at times. Kap and RG3 have much better acceleration than Cam Newton. That attribute makes them better at running the read option than Cam. They're not better QBs... they are better suited to run the read option against athletic DL/LBs (period). Boy I hate manish behind children!

Sorry, this was directed to jtnc. I apologize if any one else was offended.

QBs like Cam are nonexistent. Athletes like Cam are not that rare. Most division 1 colleges have a few guys as big and fast as Cam. Of course they don't have his ability to throw the laser darts all over the field though.

RG3 has elite speed and acceleration and Kap is no slouch. They don't grow on trees either.

There was a film study on our read option last year and out of the almost 200 time we ran it we only had 7 negative or zero yardage plays and almost all of them were misreads.

Misreads will happen from time to time so you can put that on Cam if you want but that is being a bit nitpicky IMO.

The negative plays are because of misreads and missed assignments and have nothing to do with Cam's acceleration or speed.

I have a video of him doing that against CB Patrick Peterson and he is more athletic and have more speed than a LB/lineman. Watch around the 8 second mark.
