Gettis is very much in play for the WR3 spot per Joe Person

At least we should have a competitive group of WR's. Gettis is going to get the best out of Tedd Ginn and LaFell knows he'll need to step up big time if he doesn't want to be demoted. Not that we are at that point but if Gettis keeps striving I could see it happen.

^See smart thinking here.

Instead of ragging on Lafell because he what he isn't why cant we be happy that Gettis a nice surprise and helps the unit as a whole get better.

Until you can prove that in some quantitative manner you are spouting unfounded opitions.

If Gettis can 1)Stay Health, 2) get comparable minutes, 3) Produce better mins, and finally contribute to the offense other than going vertical then you can make some kind of arguement.

Lafell ranked roughly middle of the pack for #2 WRs and contributes nicely to the run game down field.

He is a very nice #2 WR and for people to say other wise makes them look football dumb.

gettis had 3-4 really nice games his rookie year and since has had the easiest job in football, being on IR and going to rehab for his injuries all the while adding absolutly nothing to the team other than being some negative cap space.

I realize u might not have meant it like u said it but being placed on IR and rehabbing is prolly one of the toughest jobs. Thomas Davis has went through hell and it wasn't easy. But like I said I realize u probably didn't mean it.

Dam I agree with you again.

People think WR only job is to catch passes. They don't see the downfield blocking Lafell does to spring big runs. Or the route running he does as a decoy to get other people open.

I would also liked to point out. That Lafell compared to other number 2 WR get very little targets.

He gets 77 targets and Julio Jones gets 145.

My main Problem with Cam is he needs to trust and give more shots to the other WR not name Smith and Olsen. Even when it seem like they are Covered.

Bolden never gets separation and is never completely open but he still gets targeted. Cam has to learn to trust that his other WR can make a plays for him to.

Now I think Gettis has earned a shot at the 3rd Wr competition but Lafell has locked down the 2 spot for this year and has atleast earned a little trust from Cam.

How long would it take Gettis to get to that point with Cam??

Good post, I liked the Boldin comparison. Also, glad you used targets in your argument. Smitty had 138 and Olsen had 104. That's where Newtons first two looks usually go unless the play is specifically designed for someone else and the stats back that up. Which is understandable but I'd like to see him look Lafell's way more often (like you said).

I've been trying to find a site that shows 'drops' for each player but haven't had any luck. If my memory serves me well, Lafell had a drop in the KC game that should have been a TD and a drop in the cowboys game on a 3rd down play on one of the first possessions. I don't know if these things affect Cam wanting to target Lafell more often. The more I watch past Panthers games the more I'm coming around to Lafell. I was excited when we drafted him but expected more from him. But in Lafell's defense it's hard to put up big numbers with the number of opportunities he has been given.

However, when they do run plays in which Lafell appears to be the first option I like what I see. Just a couple that come to mind are the TD passes he caught against Washington and Dallas (2011,2012) both within the 5 yard line where Lafell appeared to be the first option.

Could Gettis possibly challenge Lafell for the number 2 spot? Yes, I think that's possible. But I don't think that'll happen in the near future. If Gettis continues to progress each week I don't know how he won't be awarded the number 3 WR position. Hard not to fall in love with Gettis size and speed. Like everyone says competition is good for everyone and brings out people's best. I just hope Gettis can stay healthy and contribute this year. If Gettis does those two things, I think next year he'll have a legit shot at Lafell.

Edit: Lafell had 3 drops in 2012.

Sorry you are having to agree with me. I can stay committed to the 3 or so we disagree with on....lol.

No doubt, but it doesn't contribute to wins. Should have been more clear.

And the huddle will implode the first time the ball pops off his shoulder pads and into a safety's hands when he tries to catch the ball with his body.  You'd think he would have spent some extra time with the jugs machine the last two years.

Still wishing the best for him, but David-- use your hands!

It is funny how people on here watch the game and think Gettis is better than LaFell. He hasnt really done much or any thing against starters. I would like to see him the 3rd preseason game do something. And by the way if he made the team he wouldnt even get a game day jersey because he has no special team value.
