Can we just sign some Veterans already

I am not really sure why we haven't signed guys like Quintin Mikell and Travelle Wharton. (or Brandon Moore when he was available) The motto this season seems to be "Just Win" and I think everyone would agree these guys would help us do so. I do like the idea of letting young guys develop, but you usually don't go that route when the main concern is winning games. We have cap space so offer the guys a decent 1 year deal so we keep the books clear for next season. I can understand older players not wanting to play for vet minimum. A better O lineman could be cut that we could pick up but i don't think that any safeties will be cut that are better than Mikell.

Yes please....just let this team sign someone whose name I recognize. That will make me feel better.

Many teams need help, so the fact that these guys are still sitting out there tells you that they are no good or too expensive.

Situation will help itself on both counts after the second round of cuts. Not so much the first round.

Even in the second round there won't be as many guys as in years past.  Most of the high cap guys who could be replaced by a younger guy stepping up are already gone.  Teams dumped all those guys at the beginning of  the offseason.  Some got snatched up while others are still out there. Guys if they don't get picked up will likely retire. I can see picking them up in the event of injury because they can come in for half a year and start.  But not as backup or even depth which you use to develop guys when you plan to build for the future. We brought in a bunch of free agents to try and win now in the late 90s, and it lead to a 1-15 season.

Having terrible depth on the offensive line and a group of strong safeties without a decent amount of starting experience is fuging stupid.

Exactly. The failure of us to develop players and an over reliance on short term vets in the late 90s which was continued by Seifert led to the 1-15 season in 2001.

Well the team really didn't have a choice in picking up vets or not with the expansion draft and all. I get where you're going though, no back to back winning seasons and only four winning seasons out of eighteen does lead one to believe in poor ownership.

Signing free agents worked out well in 95 and 96 when we had to build a winner in order to gain fans and get the franchise going. But then instead of building through the draft, developing players and doing what we are doing now, we kept signing big name free agents. We compounded that by stupid decisions like canning the guys we needed like Beuerlein and drafting guys like Weinke.

Weinke was drafted in the fourth round, I wouldn't really call that a wasted draft pick.

Byron Bell and Garry Williams make up the right side of our line.  Both UDFA, both might be solid depth on most teams, both starters here.  Our previous backup LT was Bruce Campbell, who's never done anything since being over drafted and is out for most of the year anyways.  Our current backup LT seems to be Nate Chandler, an UDFA DT. Our D2 project from Midwestern Illinois Vocational Institute or wherever has been training for the Tour de France since his name was called and may not actually remember what a football looks like at this point. Our second year D2 guy is bipolar and wildly switches between solid and lol usually on a play by play basis. Our backup C/G, Jeff Byers, is another UDFA who couldn't hold a job until landing in Carolina.

But yeah, fug your vets. We're developing talent here.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
