Risers and Fallers - Eagles Edition

(through the first two games)

Rising

DT Kawann Short - He looks like an amazing UT. After reading how he was being called a "hands guy" by the o-line, I watched him in preseason consistently get into the back field and give his blocker fits. He was so effective that they doubled KK and singled Fua who beat his blocker (with some weird... half-swim... half-fall into the o-lineman) and almost got a sack. I repeat, Kawann Short has been so good that it has allowed Sione Fua into the backfield. The opponent's backfield.

WR Armanti Edwards - FREE ARMANTI

WR David Gettis - I'll say it, he's back, bitches!

CB Josh Norman - 3 INTs, 1 TD. Baaaaaalliiiiin'!

RB Kenjon Barner - They're giving him the rock frequently, and I like his burst.

Falling

RB Armond Smith - Replaced by Barner

QB Derek Anderson - Looked really bad in both preseason games

CB Drayton Florence - Looked really bad vs Eagles

RG Garry Williams - Looked really bad in most games

RT Byron Bell - Looked really bad in all games

meh...

I thought Ginn looked markedly better with a different QB throwing him the ball.

I'd like to see Gettis with the 1's.

1st string defense scared me.

Offensive line scared me even more.

2008 >>> 2013 as far as talent on offense goes outside of the QB position.

Risers  -

Gano, Gettis - for all the reasons already stated.   AJ - he may not be Luke 2.0 but he seems to have good 'football intelligence' and is always around the ball.  Berner commented in an interview that Luke is calling out the offensive plays before the ball is snapped.  AJ may be that type of LB.

Not Fallers  but Not Impressive -

Shula - Looks like the same, vanilla playcalling that got him axed from TB.  Doesn't create mismatches, loads the box for the run, and not putting the defense ... on the defense.  I know it is preseason and everything that is already said.  However, at this point, it waddles and quacks like a duck.  We can only hope that once the handcuffs come off in September, he will utilize his weapons and keep the defense guessing.  With the WRs looking decent, our offense has the potential to be explosive.

Star  -  Gulp .... You cannot look at the scores during preseason but you can look at individual battles.  Star is getting handled ... easily.  Little explosion and goes vertical as soon as he makes contact.  Losing one on one matchups.  Not even plugging the middle as he gets little separation and RBs are running right by him. On the bright side, there is plenty of separation when the RB gets past him.  Not giving up on him but he has not been the dominant inside force that we need.
