Risers and Fallers - Eagles Edition

I am not a big fan of making sweeping observations of the team in the preseason, but I think it is fair game to take notice of players who's stock may be rising or falling.

Stock Rising - David Gettis. Gettis had 5 receptions and 82 yard mostly from Derek Anderson and was the game leader of either team on the field. Can Gettis push for the #2 WR spot? Sure does look like he could.

Stock Falling - Any second half WR not named Gettis. Derek Anderson threw exclusively to Gettis, not giving the other receivers a chance to showcase their talent and make the team. It could be that the other receivers were not open, or it could mean that Anderson has his go to guy.

Stock Rising - Richie Brockel. Really liked what I saw from him. Solid blocks and a smooth 15 yard reception showing soft hands.

Stock Falling - Brandon Williams. He missed several key blocks in the run game. While he may be a decent threat in the passing game, you won't make a Ron Rivera squad as a tight end if you cannot block at the line of scrimmage.

Stock Rising - Tauren Poole. He was the only RB on the Panthers roster that ended up averaging more than 4 yards per carry. He also had the longest run of the game for the Panthers. This undrafted kid out of Tennessee is getting the reps that Jonathan Stewart would be getting because Poole at 5'10 and 210 pounds is the closest "fill in" as a Jonathan Stewart runner we have. He appears to be making the most of this opportunity and showing promise.

Stock Falling - Armond Smith. Smith had one rushing attempt the entire game. It does not appear this kid will make the team and is being replaced by Kenjon Barner.

Who are your risers and fallers of the game?

Still rising - Josh Norman, his are we going to justify keeping him in the bench.

Given the state of the online I thought deangelo ran as good as he could.

Graham Gano

Falling - Preseason Cam Newton showed up.

Mike Shula- I like the focus on the run game but the play selection was much to be desired

Brandon Williams got Barber tackled for a loss.

The Dline- after last weeks showing this may have been the only direction to go. Shady McCoy and the Qbs did what they wanted in the ground.

Can't argue that Gettis is on the rise. I can proudly say I've been on this kids band wagon ever since he invented the super man.

Stock is falling for the Drayton Florence/ Captain combo. I would like to see them replaced by Josh squared (Thomas and Norman).

Stock is falling for our oline. Not sure exactly who was our weakest link, probably Williams, but Cam had NO time.

The Cole/ Fua combo was pretty ugly. Can't deny these two are falling.

I'll give 3 for each since i gotta leave soon....

Risers:

Some kickers just have extremely inconsistent years. This year may be one of Gano's good years.

Gettis is on a rocket ship to the top as a definite riser

Josh Norman is going to become our starting corner

Fallers:

Captain Munnerlyn looks awful every time he is on the field. His man is open just about all the time and the opposing QBs pick on him.

Garry Williams showed me why I never really liked him in the first place

Derek Anderson is terrible. Very inaccurate. Could be cut after preseason.

Edit: Changed from Fua to Anderson. Hard to be called a Faller when you're already at the bottom.

Riser

Josh Norman - even though it was a Hail Mary pick it counts...he has had some solid tackles and does look to be playing improved over last year.

Big Money - what? How can someone with a fat deal like that be a riser? Well, I think people forgot who the best DE overall still is...I think CJ is showing Hardy hasn't yet earned that title

Falling

OL - no holes yet for the first string RBs. They are trying to....so the fact it is preseason doesn't make it a non issue. Out run game will be no better than last year with that.....and that forces Cam to take on a big load in the running game.

and a sidnote, Shula will have our offense implode if he significantly increases are rush attempt percentage with how bad our OL is....will make our RBs look average like last year

Riser Gettis

Everyone else forgot to show up.

QB's all looked hit or miss, very training campish

RB's, no holes, so did the best with what they had

WR's did well for the horrible throws coming their way

OLine, they are what we thought they were, pedestrian and in need of an infusion on talent

DLine, looked slow and out of shape

LB's first game they did not look dominant, a step behind the fast paced offense

DB's same as LB corps, just a step behind all night

Special teams no not so good in coverage, but kicker has booming leg

Lots to work on starting tomorrow, they had better not show up week one with the lead boots they were wearing last night. Seattle is another fast team and if this is how we play agains quick teams, it does not bode well

Gettis - what's to add?

Anderson Russell - the guy's gonna scrap his way onto the PS

The Rookie DT's - while they both have their moments of rookiedom, they have flashed why we should be excited to have them man the middle for the next 5 years at least.

Fallers

Coaching staff - NE mauled Philly for a quarter and a half of hell, and we go out and play right into their D Line's strength by passing and running outside for almost the entire first quarter.

Want a perfect chance to sharpen up your run blocking with live opposing players? Too bad, you just wasted it.

Whoever the kicker is that isn't Graham Gano - Enjoy the AFL!

Coaching staff - Well over a minute left in a Preseason game with all your time outs AND YOU TRY TO RUN OUT THE CLOCK?!!!

Most coaches would kill for such a great opportunity to practice their hurry up, but not Rivera. No he couldn't wait to unfurl his giant labia and sail on in to the locker room to show he was in midseason chickensh*t form.

Meanwhile, the coach on the other side if the field, possessing both a brain and a pair of testicles, wisely called timeout so he could see what his offense could do with 50 seconds.

the only thing Gettis has proven is that he should be running with the 1s and see what happens from there. Very encouraging though.

Want to see Brandon Williams more with the 1s. Had some great blocks then some awful ones.

Anderson Russel deserves to make the team.

I'm not putting any stock on preseason playcalling or Cam. Cam is a gamer.

Basically what I would have said. Although some of those miss throws could be charged to the OLine. We could have Adrian Peterson in the back field last night and it wouldn't have made a difference. There Dline was in a better position to take some of those hand offs.

I would like to see Norman improve in zone coverage however I starting cornerback duo of Norman and Thomas pleases me more than a Florence/Captain tandem. Melvin White had a nice tackle on one play, him and Dockery are by far the teams best open field tacklers out of the corner back group.

Mitchell has to learn how to play within the game. Even the hit last year on Cam IMO should have drawn a flag. Mitchell gave the eagles offense life right from the start. I like Mitchell and the attitude that he brings, but I also don't think we've seen our last personal foul penalty from 21 this year.

Lastly, some may disagree with this but I like what I've seen from Deangelo. He is running alot more like his old self than like the Deangelo of the last 2 years. He isn't going down on the first sign of contact and is fighting for extra yards.

And I'm once again excited about Gettis. I thought he showed more flashes than Lafell in 2010. If Gettis can get back on track and stay healthy this would be huge for the panthers. Can teach size and speed and he has both.

    • Kraven has awful shitty comic book movie vibes all over it. It's just more of whatever studio owns the rights to the Spiderman set, but no longer actually has Spiderman anymore. Wicked is probably no more enjoyable. 3 hour long musicals are tough to endure.
    • One of those guys who throws a pass that makes you yell "OMG" then immediately follows it with one that makes you go "WTF" 😳 Essentially the Brett Favre prototype...
    • The Giants games are an interesting comparison for sure. We could compare the Chiefs vs the Bucs as well, since at least both teams are largely the same as they are now, rather than the Giants whose coach lost his mind after losing to us. 30-24 KC in overtime. Hunt had 106 yards and Mahomes had 291. Baker threw for 200 yards, but 2 TDs. Their leading rusher had 25 yards or something. Our offense outperformed what the Bucs did vs KC, but being a division game we won't have the benefit of being overlooked. If our D plays how it did in the 4th quarter I think we can get some stops.  Can Bryce carry a second game? I'd rather not find out and have Chuba carry the load, but we'll see.
