2009 We traded our 2010 1st round pick to pick Everette Brown. WR's picked after Brown in 09 include: Brandon Tate, Mike Wallace

2010: That 1st rounder we traded for Brown WR's and TE's picked after the 17th pick which was ours- Demaryius Thomas, Dez Bryant, Arrelious Benn, Rob Gronkowski, Golden Tate

2011: WR's TE's Drafted after our 2nd round given up for edwards- Kyle Rudolf, Titus Young, Randall Cobb,

finding a replacement for peppers is a pretty big priority. Yes, that attempt failed.

So in your eyes, they neglected the receivers cause they targeted a player they liked.

Hell, they sure neglected receivers this last draft to. Wouldn't you agree?

Brought in at least 20 receivers predraft, only to pass them up for defensive tackles!!

I know, it was unfair of me to ask you to make a list of players when it was pointless to begin with.

I'll think I'll get over it.

As a Panther fan, I share the frustration that Steve Smith has been our passing attack for so very long.

It's easy to say they neglected the position.

The Panthers have actually invested a lot of picks and time to finding receivers. Much of it failed to develop. It's a tough business.

Receivers picked between pick #17 (what would have been Carolina's 1st round pick had they not traded up for Everette Brown in 2009) and pick #48 (where Carolina picked Jimmy Clausen).

#22 - Demaryius Thomas (94 receptions, 1424 yards, 10 TDs last year)

#24 - Dez Bryant (82 receptions, 1382 yards, 12 TDs last year)

#42 - Rob Gronkowski (55 receptions, 790 yards, 11 TDs last year, in 11 games)

omitted #39 Arrelious Benn for irrelevance. And I know Gronkowski is a TE, but I felt the need to throw him in there.

Both Thomas and Bryant's stats were better than Steve Smith's last year (73 receptions, 1174 yards, 4 TDs) so you're already wrong. Carolina has had a chance to draft receivers better than Steve Smith. Poor draft decision making has prevented that from happening.

Receivers picked between #33 (what would have been Carolina's 2nd round pick had they not traded up for Armanti Edwards) and #65, where Carolina selected Terrell McClain.

#58 - Torrey Smith (49 receptions, 855 yards, 8 TDs last year)

#59 - Greg Little (53 receptions, 647 yards, 4 TDs)

#64 - Randall Cobb (80 receptions, 954 yards, 8 TDs)

omitted #44 Titus Young for irrelevance.

If Steve Smith went down Carolina would easily have the worst WR corps in the league. Don't say they haven't had the chance to do better, because they have. Hindsight is 20/20 but when your top receiver is 34 and for over a decade they haven't been able to groom someone behind him, something is seriously wrong. Maybe Gettleman can find someone.

No need to say that Thomas or Bryant is better than Steve Smith. Perhaps moving in that direction, but no where near Hall material yet. Both have had injury issues, and one is suspect off the field.

Could we have drafted his heir-apparent? Yes.

Btw, during his rookie year, Gettis was right up there with them (scrapping Thomas first year, and comparing the second).

It seems to me that we have a slot WR serving as the #1 (and doing a helluva job), a lower-tier (so far) #2 WR (Lafell) and a bunch of potential.

I think we are going to keep 6, and I think that something is going to have to give.  As for signing Hixon, not as bad as some of the MH signings (Keyshawn, and a few others who never panned out).  A vet min. 1-year contract is not a bad deal.  Based on history and camp:

Smith

Lafell

Gettis

Edwards

Ginn

Adams

And I agree with Red (I think) and a few others--get Adams some reps on offense.  We need to see what he can do.

If this is the group, we have a pretty versatile group.

Are they going to have better careers?  Probably not.  Are they both better than Steve Smith right now?  Yes.  I'll take either of those guys over 34 year old Steve Smith.  I love Smitty and he's still a gamer, but he's not the same game-changer he was some years ago.  I'll be surprised if he puts up another 1k yard season.

I hope Gettis can step up, but considering he hasn't made a catch since 2010, it's a long shot.  People say he was in Rivera's "doghouse", but maybe it was Chudzkinski's doghouse he was in all along.  Hopefully he makes an impact this year because the Panthers look like the same team as last year so far.

using 2nd and 3rd round draft picks on wr's aren't necessarily duct tape fixes, maybe guys like dj hacket or keyshawn or older Moose may be, but not every team uses their first round picks on wr's.

so 3 picks in 10 years on a position that has gotten worse is not exactly fixing either. Jarrett was a bust, and Edwards is 4 years in, and finally starting to look like a #3 WR. again, this position has been ignored by this organization for to many years and it shows. every team does not use 1st rounders on WRs, but some of the most successful teams in today's NFL do invest in the position a lot and early. TEs should be included as well. i did this in another thread, but look at the teams in the playoffs last year WR/ TE depth and when these players were drafted?

if you believe we only used 3 picks at wr in 10 years i have nothing left for our conversation.

that was in response to investing early in the position, which has only been 3 times in the past 10 years. again with 1 bust, and 1 guy who is just not contributing to the position after 4 years. the panthers got extremely lucky with picking Smith in the 3rd, and thought they could keep investing in mid-late round picks for a diamond in the rough. that only works when you have scouts who can find talent at that position.
