O-Line Depth

Recommended Posts

Cause just a few months ago we were $16 million over the cap with massive gapping holes at DT and CB and now we're a good deal under after losing a few mid-tier players and fretting about back up O Line depth.

You guys trust too quickly for my taste. I at least need to see a few regular season games.

Lol...the guys talking about cuts are awesome! As if the cuts are going to magically produce a starting quality guard or tackle that will come play for us. Or even adequate depth. Do I think we'll sign someone? Absolutely, we have to...do I think that person will probably resemble a Jeff Byers rather than a Dwan Edwards? Yup.

The thing is that unless we make a trade, no one is coming to rescue us. That was one of John Fox's favorite lines, and while those lines were annoying they were rarely wrong and usually very insightful. No one is coming. Get over it. There's no master plan in place where Gettlemen is going to magically pull a rabbit out of his hat and turn it into an offensive linemen.

We are going into the season with what we have. They are hoping that Williams can improve and be a solid-at-best player. They just want to make it thru this season. Now that Campbell went down we'll probably have to sign Wharton or some other castoff. But face it, no one's coming.

The offensive line is just like the defensive line last year at this point. Which is why we are heading in the right direction but we aren't close yet. Still a 7-9 team with a 10-6 ceiling. Sucks too because with a good offensive line and maybe one good corner I think we could be a 9-7 team with a 12-4 ceiling.

Excellent post. Hammer meet nail.

Agreed with most of this. Especially the record/ceiling part.

I actually got into it with James Dator a good bit about this last night.

To say PapaGetts is ignoring this issue is disingenuous to him and the situation he was put into. We had 2 exceptionally large holes on the team with the DLine and the cornerbacks on the roster. The OLine needed depth, but for the most part they appeared to be an OK unit with a ton of injuries.  He flipped the cap problem on its head for the most part, with the tools available to him.  He then made moves to apply bandages to the worst of the teams wounds (CB/DT/WR), knowing that OLine, WR, and CB would need to be continually addressed over the next couple of seasons for the Panthers to from that 10-6 ceiling to a Superbowl contender ceiling.

I have faith in the man, because he was given trash and is making what he can out of it, I've agreed and understood almost every move he has made and like any Rookie, I will give him a good 3 seasons to make something happen.

A 1-2 year fixer can be found in the Training Camp cuts. Just because a player doesn't work out at one place doesn't mean he won't work out here. Dwan is a good example of this. He isn't a corner stone Defensive Lineman and as such PapaGetts didn't pay him as one.   He is, however, a guy that can come in, start, not poo the bed doing so, and hold the fort until our rookies are ready to be every down players.

Such is not impossible to find for out RG/RT woes.

That said, I reserve the right to bitch unendingly about OLine problems week 1.

Achilles heel of the team is the oline. If we dont find some help forget about a vertical passing game.It will be quick slants and dump offs along with alot of runs mixed in. They will have to do what it takes to keep Cam upright

And at least someone who can pretend to be a LT. There's Gross and.... Nate Chandler now? I've been saying it for months, but if Gross misses anytime, our left side will be even more garbage than our right side. Amini isn't good enough to anchor that side.

If preseason one is any indication, the backup at left tackle is actually Byron Bell.

Some good veteran olineman will become available after cuts. It happens every year. OG is probably the easiest position to find  a decent plug and play(though Williams looks good so far) player and at tackle we just need depth(though I'm not a big Bell fan). To me there is 0% chance Gettleman doesn't address it.  He is a football guy and has said all along that he puts emphasis on oline and dline. We gotta remember that he played chicken with Dwan and Captain and let them walk to find a better deal and both came back. That's what he's doing with Wharton.

Cap situation being what it was, everyone had to know we were in for a year or two of bargain bin shopping and dumpster diving.

For now, I'd say the starters are set. Depth isn't all that comforting at the moment, but it's not like we're looking at a finished roster in mid-August.

Dwan Edwards was a cut. Just saying.

Cap Cuts do happen after TC.

You might want to rethink your whole post to sound less stupid.

We brought in Jeremy Bridges late one year and he was a solid point of our Oline for 2 years.

Let Gettlemen do his magic before we say this can't happen or that can't happen.

I dont think it sounds stupid to suggest that the likelihood of finding a Jeremy Bridges or Dwan Edwards is less than likely.  Dwan Edwards was a great pickup but that sort of thing is more the exception than the rule.  Plus, defensive tackles are in a different situation.  The bills were switching their defense and Edwards simply didn't fit.

You also have to think about the layout of the NFL right now.  Almost all the teams are thin at offensive line.  The Packers, Cowboys, and Broncos need help about as much as we do and they are much better teams than us.  The picking will be slim as well as competitive.

All I'm saying is that I'm not waiting for some savior to walk through the door and make things better. The offensive line is a year or two away and I am coming to terms with that now instead of wondering what the heck is happening when Cam is pressured constantly and very few running lanes open when the season starts.  Gettlemen has bolstered the defensive line and added depth to the defensive backs and linebackers as well as made the receiving corps actually look legit for a change.  Next year with Gross' future in doubt I'd imagine that there will be an overhaul similar to what he did at other spots, with one or two draft picks and a free agent or two as well.

It could be said that Gettlemen probably should have done that this year but I think he felt like the quickest way to balance this team out was to improve on defense and special teams.

But hey, I sound stupid so just disregard my opinion entirely.

Just going to leave this here...

Jonathan Jones ‏@jjones9

Byron Bell heading to the locker room. He was talking with the trainer for a while earlier. Unsure of his ailment

Could just be the illness that is going around the team right now though.  Hopefully we find something out soon.

Edit:  According to Person it is just an illness.

Joe Person ‏@josephperson

Byron Bell left practice early with an apparent illness.

Undrafted. #kugbila RT @nfldraftscout: Best OL performance I've seen yet, and I'm not done with Week 1 yet, was Alvin Bailey. #Seahawks

Also worth noting, but take it FWIW, Alvin Bailey was @PFF's highest rated tackle for Week 1 of the preseason (+3.3 in 45 snaps). #Seahawks

Was hoping for this guy in the 6th when our turn came :(
