Anybody realize that AE is a FA after this season?

Donald LaFell

maybe he should do something before people worry about that.

5 career catches and 2 catches in preseason.

Still, yeah. WR outside of Smith, and DB likely to make the roster outside of Godfrey and Norman, are all free agents.  I don't think that's accidental.  Some guys will prove valuable and might stay.  But even then, it's partially hedging bets on whether Rivera, and therefore schemes we're running, are even there.

Pretty much.

Barring a breakout season that'd be the stuff of legend, I don't think there'll be a whole lot of competition for him.

If anything happens this season, I'd expect to see LaFell extended before Edwards.

And as far as receiving threats, I'd have to look but I think Olsen is still under contract next year.

AE may wanna be dat deal. LaFell may believe he dat deal. But neither one are gonna get dat deal based on their resumes.

exactly...  even if AE puts up 1000 yards this year, Panthers aren't going to sign him to a ridiculous deal...  In that scenario, whatever he gets paid will be quite lower than his future value..

oh, and...

Olsen definitely is - maybe Hartsock is, and Williams would be if he makes the roster.  But at WR, just Smith that I'm aware. That said I don't see many draftees from '11/12 being in the conversation a month from now.

LaFell is probably worth keeping at a reasonable rate.  He might be about all he's gonna be, but I'd take it at a reasonable rate.

Success this season would go a long way toward helping people want to re-sign next year.

Sadly it also tends to have the effect of people wanting more money if they do.

I think we have Adams under contract too, which could be a reason he makes the team.

Next year, we need a #1.  Lafell is not that WR.  Armanti is not that WR.  It will be interesting, but I think the season will answer all questions.

We need to go into next season as if Smitty is not going to continue to be great.

are we really fretting about signing a WR that has a few more catches than I do???

if you look around the league the 1 yr. contact is becoming the norm..........other serviceable WR's will be available.

PS.......not many balls left to go around after Smitty, Olsen and Lafell.........if Barner pans out even less.

Outside of App St homers, absolutely nobody would pay AE more than a bag of stale potato chips to play in the NFL. His "breakout season" is gonna be no more than 20rec 200yd 2td. He will be a 26yo, 5'11 180lb, 4-year vet WR who has averaged 1/2 reception per game. He won't generate any interest outside of Carolina. He will either be resigned on a 1-yr vet minumum deal and fight for a roster spot, or just given a plane ticket to Canada and the CFL.

or he could have a miraculous 1000 yard season with 7 touchdowns and we would be stuck having to pay him because every other team wants him....

my point is only this....

Who gives a poo about next year. can we play football this year first.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
