The reciever battle

IF... we are going off of what has transpired so far this year. AE is #3. He was last night anywho.

So far this year to me it looks like. Smitty, Lafell, AE, maybe Gettis, then take your pick. Gettis looked like he earned more playing time. Pilares has gone from a lock to uh oh this year. Ginn Jr. looked lost last night. And Adams only excitement was on Punt Returns.

IMO, we don't need more than 4WR anyway. So those last few guys are either STers, or gone.

Ginn's special team ability IMO makes him as near a lock as anyone not named 89 or LaFell.

I kinda agree. To me it is a toss-up between Ginn Jr. and Adams. They want to give Ginn a shot at WR, which would limit the ST angle. Adams has done nothing as a WR, which may enhance his ST value. I guess it all comes down to how important the return game is to Rivera. Whether Ginn has more value returning than as a WR.

If Ginn can win a WR slot, then Adams could be the Return man. As long as Joe keeps holding on to the ball. Then Joe can work on his WR skills so that he may be in the WR mix in the future. But Adams as a WR this year is a long shot.

All I know is, teams are reluctant to use players in the return game that can see action as a WR. Too much injury concerns.

For me it is this....

Ginn as a returner = one of the better ones in the NFL. The cost? A spot down on your WR depth chart.

Anyone else that takes that spot down on the WR depth chart? They probably don't bring the team near what Ginn would....bc that #4 WR simply isn't going to play much at all.

I agree. Ginn Jr. is a very good return man. IIRC, the main reason he signed here was that we told him he had a chance to win a WR spot. As of now, he has not done enough to crack the top 3 WR spots. Is he going to be happy returning if he doesn't see much time as a WR?

Hopefully, he sees enough plays at WR to keep him happy. But as of right now, imo, he has not earned significant playing time as a WR. He is our best returner, so he will get a spot one way or another.

Adams is good at Punt Returns, less so at Kick Returns. But he is not going to play at WR. Does he merit a spot?

We both agree. Once you get to 4th or lower at WR. They are not going to see much action. ST is how they stay on the team. Going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

If you want to disagree with me that is fine. But why are you trying to belittle me? Grow up. AE was our third QB in every single game last year. Gettleman never had three QBs on the roster when he worked in New York. The theory is if your first two QBs have gone down there isn't much hope anyways. Armanti can hand the ball off and run a small package, like he did last year and the year before. Under Chud we ran trick plays and we ran them well. Cam is a good QB but there are always times when you can fool the defense. We ran a double pass with Nane two years ago. Last year AE threw a nice pass to Steve that was broken up by incidental contact.

I'm an app and Armanti fan and would love seeing him as a QB, but there is no need to justify his roster spot by saying he is the third QB. He is a WR and has done a damn good job as evidenced last night. Broke Lafell open on his TD and beat his man consistently and has two receptions longer than 15 yards.

He has justified his spot on the roster by becoming a receiver, belittling him only makes you look bad. Plus people are tired of hearing the Armanti QB talk.

We pound the rock, play action to keep the D honest we win. It was seen last year. Last 5 games Dwill averaged almost 100 yards per carry, not one trick play in the 5-1 run.

I just don't see any reason to keep Adams or Pilares. They aren't good enough to see snaps at WR and couldn't make a case for themselves any time they had an opportunity...and they had PLENTY of opportunities with how weak or WR group was these past couple years. So what would we keep them for? Depth at KR/PR? We have Ginn, and Smitty or AE could do either in a pinch. No reason to keep Adams and Pilares, imo.

Adams has time to earn a spot. He looked pretty good returning last night.

So you think we'll carry him as a backup returner? I think that'd be a waste of a roster spot. I do think he's more likely to make the team than Pilares, but more so bc he was drafted just last year than anything.

I think 4th and 5th WR spots are earned bc of what you can do not as a WR a majority of the time....especially in schemes that don't run a lot of WRs.

He could still earn the job as our primary punt returner or as one of our returners if we mix it up a little instead of it being Ginn all the time at everything.

I could see a Smith, LaFell, Edwards, Ginn and Adams depth chart. I think the last spots come down to special teams....

After 89, Lafell, and the chosen #3 WR, I think it comes down to who plays special teams or not.  If it is a tie, they keep the guy willing/able to play special teams.  If you are the #4, 5, 6 or 7 WR, you better play special teams or you are probably sent packing.

I think it's gonna go

Smith

LaFell

Edwards

Ginn

Gettis

Adams

Hixon will get cut if he doesn't get healthy. Pilares just doesn't have the raw talent of Gettis, Adams, or Armanti. Between Hixon and Pilares I think you'd take Hixon because he's proven to be a clutch pass catcher and has been able to produce.

Ginn is going to make it because he's too good of a returner and I don't see Adams getting enough return opportunities to upstage him in preseason.

Who knows though, it's possible we could go with 7 WR's. I think there's a little bit of wiggle room on the roster because you have guys like DJ Moore who are tweener CB/Safety's.

Might as well run with 2 QB's because Clausen simply cannot compete on this level. If we have to play him we are done for. He will just not go down field with the football.
