Ron Rivera's Training Camp MVP: Armanti Edwards

Recommended Posts

You left out the fact that Armanti Edwards was a quarterback at a D1-AA school with no experience at wide receiver.

He literally had to learn an entire new position against high quality players. It's one thing to learn a new position in high school where not every kid is All-State and SEC bound, but to do it at the NFL is almost impossible; especially if you are a college quarterback. It's not like he was a cornerback and just switching to the offensive side of the ball. AE had to forget everything he had done at App State and pretend he was a high school kid learning a new position again.

It was obviously going to take time for him to adjust. On top of that, multiple wide receivers have said Coach Proehl gives every player their reps; which is something that they said hasn't been done in the past.

So not only is AE trying to learn a new position, but he's trying to do so with limited reps; another near impossible task.

You never really know what you have in a player, until you actually give that player a chance (something Rivera does but Fox did not).

Finally a lot of fault goes on the fans for expecting too much based on where he was drafted. Most people expected him to come in and succeed right away because he was a top pick.

The fact is AE has finally learned the wide receiver position, been given a chance, taken advantage of that chance, and now it's time for him to show what he's got in actual games.

As far as Brandon Williams goes, he actually has an easier route in my opinion. Yes, it took him longer to get to the NFL and yes his story is more unique; but remember this guy was going to be playing college ball at Oregon and physically he is off the charts. Williams doesn't have to learn a position and he doesn't have much competition for reps.

In essence, Williams just has to get up to speed on the NFL game and he should be good to go; something that might only take two years.

fwiw, armanti played WR in high school until his senior year. I know it is high school but he was catching passes and things of that nature.

I also heard rumors that he had offers to SEC schools to be a wide out but chose app because he could play qb. don't know if that is true though.

Most people don't give the benefit of the doubt to a fourth year player. I'm not saying it's right but that's how most people operate. A first year player is a completely different situation. I'm not arguing whether either of them should be given the benefit of the doubt or not, just stating that it shouldn't be mind boggling.

The thing is, it has nothing to do with what year they are in. Any intelligent Panther fan should be able to figure this out

A player at a position that he has no experience at (Armanti Edwards), is going to have a much tougher transition then a player (Brandon Williams) that is playing the same position that he was at college at Joilet and for a little bit at Oregon.

That could be true, but unfortunately even playing wide receiver at a high level in college doesn't guarantee you a successful career (Dwayne Jarrett).

I understand and appreciate your post though.

I agree. But you can't just throw out that AE is in his fourth year. Some people are tired of waiting for him to develop and aren't going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Whether right or wrong it's that simple

Unless you have been to camp or fan fest and watched him closely this year, I don't think you can comment either way.

i am open minded only because of the consistency of reports about AE. i have heard positive reports about him before, but they usually taper off quickly...usually once the pads come on. that didn't happen this year.

usually it seems like they have been reaching for praise for AE and that it's been a bit forced, more wishful thinking. that's not the case this year. everyone who has gone and watched him has been impressed and that's something that hasn't slowed down.

for those of us who haven't gotten to go down there to see, we are forced to choose between what we've known to be AE in the past or trusting reports from those who have seen him.

i can't blame anyone for not believing the hype about him from those who have been to TC. soon enough, tho, we'll all know what the real deal is and if he is deserving of the hype. one way or the other, someone is getting ready to be wrong about him. i'm hoping that it's all of us doubters who are because it would be nice to have something more of worth from that draft than just lafell.

Armanti is almost as polarizing a player as Cam Newton among our fanbase.

It happens every year. It will pan out. Whether it is trying to justify the fact we MAY not go 11-5 or the fact that Armanti may not even be our #4, the fanatics go white blind in their brain to the extent that the definition of critique is lost.

We all want the team to win and we get filled with so much testosterone that it's all fight fight fight no way we will lose you suck GO FIND A NEW TEAM!!.

Then we lose in week one 28-12 and Armanti goes 0-0 and we get dead silence.

Maybe this year will be different.

I hope so I'm tired of sitting through this nonsense.

Go panthers!

Unless Armanti is now our number 2 receiver, I don't see what all the hype is about.  I hear he's impressing in camp, that's great.  However, we are talking about practice man.  Practice!  Now, we got a game coming up.  Armanti better put up good numbers to back up the attemtion.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
