Every Panther fan in the world WANTS Smitty in. But realistically he's not even close. He had the unfortunate luck of playing with a bad quarterback, on a run first team for 10 years, during the time of offensive explosion. Current players numbers are going to poo all over smitty's. Add that to the fact that WR is the hardest position to make it in since there has been a complete log jam in HOF Receivers over the past few years. He's my favorite player of all time and I would gladly make the trip to Canton if he ever got in, but you need to let the fantasy go.

Hes:

-27th all time in receptions (plus there are 5 players real close to him that will pass him in a few years, not even counting the Megatron's and AJ Green types)

-23rd in receiving yards (3 about to pass him)

-59th in receiving TDs

-0 Super Bowls

-0 MVPs

-only had over 8 TDs ONCE in his career

right now, Smitty and Chad Johnson have almost identical all time stats

Smitty: 772 catches. 11452 yards. 63 Rec TDs

Chad: 766 catches. 11059 yards. 67 RecTDs

Great player? Without question. Hall of Famer? Not a chance

peppers and smith will both be HoFers

lets say smith gets 2500 more yards for the remainder of his career. that puts him at 14,000, a number that i think is definitely high enough for HoF induction.

and it's not all about the numbers, vets and retired players alike ALL praise smith and think of him as an elite talent still at the age of 34. his stature might even get him a few points from some voters. he is a unique talent with his size, strength, explosiveness, and mouth and that uniqueness is considered in these type of things i think.

Greene should definitely be the next to get in. I love Reggie White, but it doesn't feel like he's OURS. That was almost a forgotten season...

Smitty has been my favorite player for years and his achievements should no doubt be recognized at some point by the HOF. You have to remember, he is the FIRST WR to ever accomplish what he has and play the way he plays at his size. There has not been any WR like him before and its not very likely there will be another. Writers have to consider him for that, rings or no rings... Problem is, he hasn't exactly been a media darling over the years, so that won't work in his favor. I believe he should be in regardless.

If it's based purely on stats Michael Irvin isn't in. There are a bunch of average receivers with big career numbers. I know with my heart and eyes that Steve played like a Hall of Famer. But the list of receivers is long and decorated. Also the voting process is an issue. Old crusty white journalists vote and Steve hasn't always been kind to those people. Hines Ward was less talented but he has better numbers (for now) and the notoriety.

but how many of those WRs on that long decorated list have a Triple Crown? one maybe two?

dont hold your breath on either one. peppers makes it before smith, and he's a longshot. if peppers makes it, so does dwight freeney.

peppers- 2nd overall pick 2002 draft- 111.5 sacks- 37 forced fumbles

freeney- 11th overall pick 2002 draft- 107.5 sacks- 44 forced fumbles

peppers ranks 18th all time in sacks, freeney ranks 21st

freeney's 44 forced fumbles leads the nfl since 2002, and he also has a ring.

to my knowledge neither peppers or freeney ever ended the career of a teammate with an assault.
