Things you HOPE your children never have to experience.

I don't have kids, but if I did, I can see myself trying to describe to my kids all the freedoms, societal norms and the enjoyment of life that were so much more prevalent then than they are now.

Imagine, we're continually regressing by removing the rights and privileges of specific population groups (women, minorities, senior citizens, etc.), government spying on your and your neighbors, union busting, sending your job overseas... in short, I'm glad I don't have the kids that will have to try to grow up and live as part of such a restricted, over-governed, zero-tolerance, unaccepting society.

I was thinking of seeing the twin towers come down.  Yes I know that wouldn't happen again, but I hope that my kids (maybe one day) don't have to experience something like that.

Also a flood like I went through with hurricane Floyd.

But what they do have to experience is growing up in the post-9/11 world of the Patriot Act, phone tapping, internet spying, airport searches, law enforcement authority unlike anything us older folks grew up with, protracted wars overseas for no apparent reason...

yeah this is a tough one. my 2 girls are 13 and 11 and even hurtful things at school or with each other pains me. they recently lost their grand dad(wifes dad) and while the older responded the way i thought i wasn't sure how my younger one would. she is a brilliant kid and is a few grade levels of where she is but i could tell it didn't register the way it did with her sister.

as a dad you want to protect and its hard to know there are times i have to flat out let them fall down to learn what they have to. that junk is not easy to do.
