What exactly is the point of running a conservative offense?!?

That conservative fox ball u speak of is what got us to our only Super Bowl appareance and damn near won it if it wasnt for kasay.

while that's true on the season, it wasn't foxball that kept us in the game. we scored quickly and often in the fourth quarter. the patriots went conservative. which defense was on the sideline sucking down oxygen when it mattered most?

good job.

But can you answer my question... what's the best way to counter smaller defenses?

Wrong again. Defenses have gotten larger gradually overall in the last 50 years. People have said that linebackers have leaned down overall because of the passing game, but that was years ago and if the answer to counter that was to run, run, run, teams would've exploited it already.

Keep up.

Coaches only keep their jobs when they win. It is an odds game, and coaches play them to the hilt.

No coach is going to be aggressive at every turn. Their jobs depend on them being flexible and able to adjust to any given scenario.

And lastly. Having a great QB doesn't hurt.

dude... seriously, going back 50 years when you had 190 lb. OL?? I'm talking about the last decade, not when there were still white-only teams.

So, teams aren't exploiting smaller defenses? Remind me again what our biggest weakness has been the last few years?

I would say somewhat average DTs..  not bigger LBers....

a conservative ball control offense is something that can occasionally be an effective in-game situational strategy when it's executed perfectly.  even that's noticeably starting to go away with teams like the saints around that can get in to scoring position in 50 seconds.

the idea that it can be effective as an overall offensive philosophy is a stone age mentality.

Every moment of the game is situational. When you have a lead and your defense is playing well you would be a fool to make risky passes when you are moving the clock gaining first downs and keeping the ball away from their offense. On the other hand if you are 10 points behind in the fourth quarter than running at all except to keep the defense honest might be a terrible strategy. But as Zod defined it controlling the clock and minimizing turnovers absolutely is and should be the overall philosophy of the team. If you are dumping off the ball to your backs making high percentage throws to your receivers in a 2 minute offense you are in a ball control offense that is conservative in the sense you are not making risky throws or throwing into double coverage or trying g to split the defenders which are all risky moves. The only thing that changes is that instead of running clock you are conserving it and going out of bounds intentionally. Running the no huddle and calling plays at the line. Teams have been doing that for decades

At any point in a game you have to adapt and change to what is working and what is not. With the Saints last year we ran all over them and didn't really throw that much. Was that conservative or just effective?

Conservative is also running a safe play instead of a risky one. If you get 8 yards on first down and have second and 2 do you pick up the first down running or passing the ball or go for broke and chuck it deep every time looking for a big play. Then if you don't get the first down you are three and out instead of having 2 chances to make 3 yards. How many times did Chud do that?. Conservative can be smart but it doesn't have to be predictable or predominantly running the ball. Foxball when he was here isn't the only way or even the best way to run a conservative offense. He did okay because he had a good defense. Something I expect to have this year.
