The Decline of Modern Journalism

One of my biggest pet peeves is reporters that don't report. Give us the facts, not your opinion. Joe Person writes a story and all the major media outlets run with it. Steve Reed hears the same comments in person and thinks nothing of it.

You turn on ESPN and the news anchor is using catch phrases like "don't taze me bro". They aren't trying to inform you, they are trying to entertain you. Even the history channel has gone to poo.

 

But in the end we only have ourselves to blame. ESPN spends big on market research. They know what we read and what we watch. They know what we comment about the most on Facebook. Racism, politics, religion, New York, Boston, LA, and Chicago. These are the things that hook the most viewers. ESPN doesn't care about any of the social issues but their market research shows that they can get the most web hits and free pub from other news outlets by hammering these subjects into the ground.

 

This really gets into a bigger problem for the world we live in. We inconvenience each other and ruin our culture for a .5% increase in revenue. I could ramble on for years but I will leave you with one example: sports venues. I miss the days when our local ballpark or football stadium was named after the veterans or something with local flavor. Now everything is "Lincoln Financial Stadium at Mountain Dew.com Field". We've all become sellouts to the dollar.

Yes, why would I ever think interest in the NFL has grown.  Its not like the value of NFL franchises have more than tripled since 1998

I'm still not sure what you're arguing.  Do you really think that interest in sports hasnt increased over the last 15-20 years?  Fantasy sports have gone from almost non-existent to a massive industry.  People used to get all their sports news through established reporters on TV or in print media, now there are literally thousands of different sources you could go to to see an opinion. 

 

Its not like no one is making money, but its just so easy to get specific information about your team  that it is difficult for national news media to compete with someone who is writing specifically about the panthers, for instance.  You mentioned that the national media could have covered TD's comeback instead of always talking about Cam, and sure, they could.  But nobody outside of this region is really going to care that much, cause while TD was an amazing comeback story, he wasnt putting up JJ Watt numbers, meanwhile Peterson and Manning were going crazy and stealing all his injury comeback thunder.  Its a story you can mention when you show Panthers highlights, but its not a great story for a national audience.

 

Journalism isnt declining, there is just less money for professional journalists and the national news guys

 

Oh and there is still a lot more interest in sports today. Thats the claim I made and its completely true, I dont really give a fug if you want to be argumentative about it. NBA franchises are up over 208% in value since 1998 (from here and here), and MLB franchises are up 160% in value since 2001 (here and here).

Like I said, I was specifically talking about sports journalism. Sorry for trying to break down your hugely broad topic by focusing on one part (the one most relevant to your op I might add)

People have been decrying the fall of journalism long before 2010. The huddle has been complaining about it since its inception, and newspapers and magazines have been dying a slow death for decades. Everything didnt just start in 2010

 

I would agree that journalistic standards are declining, but there is still good journalism out there. Deadspin, for example, has actually done some really interesting investigative pieces. You just have to search through the explosion of crappy bloggers and shock writers who write outrageous things to get attention to find the quality writing.  Its just easier to notice the decline in standards when ESPN is doing it.

 

Here is my point: I can still find lots of great articles about the panthers, probably more than I was able to 10 years ago.  The difference is 10 years ago I could just read the paper to find something interesting, now I've got to come on the huddle and look through several different things that have been posted

Journalism died when journalist determined that their job was not to report on news/events but to advocate for their chosen positions.  This long, slow decline has been happening for some time, but the key event that hastened the move from reporting to advocacy was the Vietnam War.  And what affects "mainstream" journalism eventually and inevitably also affects other areas of journalism, including sports.
