Yahoo Sports Chimes In: Gettleman Comments "Insane"

It's the fans that feel like cam doesn't have an offense arround him.

Not the general manager

Well, that can be a good thing or a bad thing.  G-man is the GM, no doubt, but you can't tell diehard fans, who have been Panthers fans for years, that the sky is blue when it's raining.  iI am willing to give G-man the benefit of the doubt, truly, but comments from others today about how a Smitty-less offense looked, and about how the right side of our O-line is suspect, don't make me want to write G-man a blank check.  Patience is the key, and if G-man is as patient as he appears to be, then I'm OK with a little pointed directness here and there. He just needs to hold up his end of the bargain which may not come to fruition until another year or two.

Great article.  The author doesn't seem completely aware of the entirety of Gettleman's actual comments, but the main point is 100% accurate and a pet peeve I've had for a very long time.  The misconception that a QB is responsible for his team's record.

An NFL GM's relationship to every single player, coach, trainer and whatever on a given squad is summed up in one sentence:

"I like you, as long as you help us win."

I don't really have a problem with that, but the mistake is in thinking Gettleman doubted Newton was someone who could help the team win.  When you see the full context, it's pretty clear that's not true.

If anyone is interested, Frank Schwab will be on ESPN 730 am tomorrow at 5:15 to talk about his article.

i'd be interested in him reading yas' more complete version of the presser and then hearing his thoughts. until then I've got no interest in hearing him using person/observor as his source. someone should tweet him a link to that article yas wrote.

(note...only got thru the first page of posts...3 pages now).

I think this is a major over reaction by yahoo and many here.

The way I read his comments, Gettlemen was talking about why the other young QB's were getting more positive attention than Cam...in spite of Cam's record breaking first 2 years.  And....he is right.

Did you read Person's original spin on Gettleman's words or the reworking of his article?  His original spin was obviously intending to stir up controversy.  The way Person originally spun it made Gettleman sound hesitant to say Cam is our franchise QB for the long term and made Gettleman sound as if HE bought into the myth that the record is Cam's fault.

It was under that misdirection that many got worked up because if that HAD been Gettleman's stance, it would have been deserving of the reaction.

Person may have intentionally stirred the pot, or he could just be that stupid and can't comprehend what Gettleman said.

In response to the above post:

I'm going with the latter on that one. I saw some other poster call Person a walking concussion. Sounds about right.

In response to the article:

Getts didn't say the elephant in the room is Cam's 13-19 record, he said the elephant in the room is the 13-19 record. I believe that would fall on all players and coaches. Has Cam cost us some games? Sure. But I recall Rivera, Chud and the defense doing some boneheaded things too.

If this group stays healthy, we're 10-6 easily.

Agreed, and when I read the actual quote I couldn't get where Gettleman was saying anything critical about Newton at all. The GMs job, everyone's job, is to win. I don't think he wants to brag on a stellar QB when we are losing. He's got that position pegged and there is still work to be done on making the team around him strong.

I get a little tired of the constant Person jokes and the personal attacks (which I know I just made one) but he's pretty bad.

i am honestly kind of shocked at the backlash to gettleman's (abbreviated and out of context) remarks

that cam "isn't a winner" and "needs to learn how to win games" has been one of the most consistent criticisms hurled at him by everyone from dumbasses on ESPN.com to people in the national media who should ostensibly know better.  but now gettleman was way out of line for supposedly insinuating the same thing?

This is a 2-win team without Cam.  We are blaming Cam for losing records, when he is the reason we have won 6 and 7.  To get this team over the hump, and I think Gettlemen will do that, he needs help.

Having said that, there is a theme in Carolina this season, and that theme is to make Cam a leader.  Rivera has challenged him, players have commented, Dorsey, Shula, etc.  It is no secret that they are challenging him to step up and take full responsibility.  I really hope he earns a C on his chest after camp.

Good points overall.

Remember: Dorsey's comments were a joke. And not relevant to this/your discussion.
