Yahoo Sports Chimes In: Gettleman Comments "Insane"

This is a 2-win team without Cam.  We are blaming Cam for losing records, when he is the reason we have won 6 and 7.  To get this team over the hump, and I think Gettlemen will do that, he needs help.

Having said that, there is a theme in Carolina this season, and that theme is to make Cam a leader.  Rivera has challenged him, players have commented, Dorsey, Shula, etc.  It is no secret that they are challenging him to step up and take full responsibility.  I really hope he earns a C on his chest after camp.

I'll tell you what the elephant in the room is its the damn defense. Since drafting Cam the focus has been about 70/30 building up the defense. I've never seen a team draft a qb and do so little to help him. Is Cam perfect hell no he's only played two seasons.

I think we sometimes forget how young Cam is because of what the other young qbs are "doing"

RG3-Kirk Cousins steps in and throws for more yards in a game than RG3 had all season!

Russel Wilson-was on training wheels while playing with a stellar defense.

Andrew Luck- was asked to do a lot and that team had a magical season or maybe their schedule was magic.

Colin Kaepernick- Alex Smith was having a career season behind that line and defense. Lets not forget that.

Cam Newton- horrible offensive line with a secondary that might be taking bribes.

This is actually very true...well the first part anyway.  I'd also add that those QB's all had far superior head coaching than Cam does.

There are a few exceptions to the rule though but most of them involve older/elite QB's like Brady, Rodgers and Brees (not surrounded by elite talent)...these QB's make the guys around them better.  Younger QB's like Ryan, Flacco, Roethlisburger depend on the talent (or lack thereof) to succeed.

Very Young QB's tend to need all phases.  RGIII, Kaep, and Wilson were successful bc they had it all.  Talent around them as well as good defense to help win games and coaching.

Luck...pun intended...just got lucky bc the Colts aren't very talented.  Honestly I think his natural ability is just superior to all others.

The dolphins are trying to do it with Tannehill this year, as are the Rams, Bengals and Bills.

Then there are some QBs that just don't have the talent no matter who is around them like Ponder, Gabbert, and Locker.

One of the guys posted the full article from espn.com over in the original Gettleman to Cam thread... if you read the entire article, and everything he said, it makes you completely forget about the pause he gives on the "QB of the future" question.

Reading everything he said, his emphasis is on winning and he went on to say what a hard worker Cam is, how smart and talented he is, and he believes he will "ascend" into that winning level of QB. All of that makes "the pause" a moot point.

I was pissed when I first heard it and I was mainly pissed with Gettleman... Then I read the non-Person version and saw how out of context it was taken. Vacation Dude certainly went out of his way to sensationalize this, much like Peter King did with the "entertainer and icon" story on Cam... what a douche.

Exactly. I can't stand that prick.

Here is Yasinskas article. No mention at all of Gettleman pausing after a question either.

I'm not one of the guys, I'm a pimp.

Am I the only one who took the "elephant" in the room to mean the team's record (13-19) is what is holding cam back. Why is it that reporters and the media are saying he said that was CAM's record.

Gettlemen didn't say that. He said that they need to start winning, that they have the QB of the future and he's really good but that's been overshadowed by the team's record over the last two years. What's wrong with that??? ITS TRUE.

People are making this into something that it isn't. And its idiotic.

agree completely.

You can get away with slanting stories and taking stuff out of context to sensationalize things when you're constantly covering different stuff.

When you have to cover the same people all the time, pulling a stunt like this gets you a cold shoulder and hampers your ability to be an effective reporter.

(granted, some people doubt he has that ability to begin with)

can't wait for our beat writer to break the next important Panther story...  Which player owes another jersey chaser a bloated number of dollars in child support...  You know, the important stuff you want from your local beat writer!

Good.

He already lost a good portion of access to players for the crap he pulled last year with TD and Lafell...  I hope this gets him blacklisted and put out of a job.

Man, I miss Gantt.

Actually I don't agree with a lot in that article.  Gettleman knows that quarterbacks and teams are judged by winning and losing which is exactly what he said. Secondly I don't agree that newton has had nothing to work with. Truth is that Newton had more to work with on offense than Jake ever had. Frankly Smitty is still very good and we haven't had a TE like Olsen since Walls retired.  Our running backs may have not been used well but they are still very talented.  The offense has been fine, it has been the defense that hasn't kept up their end.

It isn't Cam's record but quarterbacks are  the most important player on the team and how he goes, the team goes.  Lets be honest here, he has been very good at times and not so good at others. Much like our record.
