Gettleman on Cam "It's time to start winning"

If you read the full article i think some folks are not getting the context of the conversation. DG said Cam has the best stats of any QB in his 1st two years ever and everyone else is talking about the other young QB's, then DG said Cam has to win more games to get that stink off of him.

Paraphrased....

Do you have a link to the article? That could clear up quite a bit in this thread.

Edit: Nevermind, lol.

At the end of the day, it is all about wins. Listening to the players so far, they understand the sense of urgency. It is going to take all of the plays being accountable about their actions on the field. Stats really don't mean that much if we are not getting the wins. All the greats had to learn that. This is still a team game. We lose as a team and win as a team. Nothing more, nothing less. I think we can all share the same thoughts that we are tired of saying, "wait until next year". The time to win is now. Not the future. That being said, I'm excited about this time this year.

Gettleman was hired in January to replace Marty Hurney, who drafted Newton with the first overall pick in 2011. Newton has thrown for more yards than any quarterback in his first two NFL seasons, but has yet to lead the Panthers to a winning season.

“Cam has had the best two years of any rookie quarterback in NFL history. And everybody talks about the other young (quarterbacks),” Gettleman said Tuesday. “What he's done has been completely lost in the sauce because of the elephant in the room – the 13-19 record.”

Gettleman was asked whether Newton was the quarterback to build around.

After a pregnant, seven-second pause, Gettleman said; “Yes, he is. But now it's time to win.”

context is king.

my interpretation of his comments after the question...cam is the right man for the job and the right guy to build around, but the time to win is now. we can't keep building. we have to start showing results. we have to start winning.

if anything it's going against this idea that we need to be building rome. we have to see results more than moral victories. what cam has done his first two years is impressive, but overall meaningless because it's come with losing seasons.

it's time to quit thinking beyond individual accomplishments and time to start thinking wins.

Thank You for this.

I knew there was a reason, I paused and contemplated, before writing a one sentence response. Lol.

Makes sense.

That's where he's coming from, and choosing words carefully enough to pause before blurting them out.  That was on the heels of a comment about Cam, but it wasn't about Cam.

Honestly, I didn't like his comments. That is especially true when I read his response to basically the same question only regarding Rivera instead of Cam. Rivera's seat should be much, much hotter than Cam's, and yet he pretty much gave Ron a free pass.

Hopefully, Gettleman is just trying to motivate Ron and Cam in the way he thinks is best. But if I was a member of the organization, I would resent what he said and especially his answer concerning Rivera.

I guess, it would have sounded much more ominous, if he made a similar comment about Rivera (cause WE KNOW his job, past performances has been quite shaky)? Shrugs.

Plus, several posters have pointed out, the OP may have quoted G-Man out of turn, out of context. So don't worry about it (if you ever did). Lol

Going into year 3 Cam should be a lot better.  But with saying that we still have this year and next to evaluate him and see if he is a franchise QB.  The Panthers also have a 5th year option they can apply for another year.  So not worried at this moment about Cam and the future lets see how he progresses and we will know more after this season.

i think cam does need to try and carry the team on his shoulders, and i don't mean solely by performance.

his presence elevates those around him, or at the very least effects it. he was the heart and soul of that auburn team and the major reason for the comebacks and wins they had. his attitude was infectious.

he needs to be that guy here. if he's confident in their ability, everyone is around him and they all show it. if he gets wrapped up in his mistakes and beats himself up, the rest of the team follows suit. it's not a knock on the others, it's just the effect of incredibly strong personalities on those around them.

he has to will this team to win. winning or losing happens based on cam's performance and mentality. is that too much for a guy to carry? if it is, he shouldn't have the job.

I think you are spot on.

I also think that his comments were actually intended for EVERYONE on the team, not just Cam.  Everyone needs to step it up and deliver.

We had chances last season to win close games late.  Yet, in most of them someone (sometimes the offense and sometimes the defense), guys did not make the plays that were needed.

He knows we are very close....it is now time to just deliver.
