7/30 camp thread

Cam has always been most bothered by pressure up through the middle.

So when they O-line today is comprised by Gross - Silatolu - Hangartner - xxx - Bell instead of Gross - Silatolu - Kalil - Hangartner/xxx - Bell which was the case yesterday, it is a pretty obvious downgrade at C and RG for todays practise. Combine that with Steve Smith also having the day off, allowing the defence to put more people in the box and in passrush and our upgrades at our interior D-line with Short and Star, the result will be a lot of pressure up the middle, which will hurt Cams accuracy. So in short, Cam wasn't having a bad day, though he could get better at handling inside pressure, the O-line simply was weaker today that yesterday. And when the line today could manage to fend of the defence and allow Cam time to read his progression and get his footwork right, he would hit his receivers with pinpoint precision.

We do need an upgrade at RG, but as others have mentioned, from a cap perspective it would be smarter to wait until we are in season and also we could pick up talented players that don't make other teams 53 man roster.

except his coach said he was having an off/bad day and needed to be making quicker reads.

the blame falls on him and that OL and the smitty-less WR corps pretty equally. smitty being off the field and the OL sucking have very little to do with cam needing to improve at making quicker reads. that's something that he needs to do regardless of how the WRs do or OL does.

I am not trying to make excuses for Cam. He is not my sun, moon and star and he definitely have a lot of areas where he can improve. Changing protections, reading coverages, changing plays, anticipating blitzes, skipping 1-2 player in his progressing and going straight to the 3rd or 4th guy, simply tossing the ball away to name a few. Still American Football is a team sport where you as a QB rely on your team-mates to hold up their end of the bargain in pass protection for example and that your receivers create some sort of separation from the defenders, else it becomes increasingly hard for a young QB, which Cam is, to excel.

So maybe both the O-line and Cam were having a bad day. The thing that annoys me is I cannot figure out just how good our D-line is, when it is going up against lesser competition.

Agree 100%.

Was the Oline that bad?  Was the Dline that good?  Was Cam off?  Hard to tell from today's practice is what I gathered from most of the twitters and posts.

I think Cam is going to have a huge year.  I also thought the right side of the line would be better than many thought....this I am more than questioning after reading most of the updates.  I trust Gettlemen.....and I hope he makes a move to solidify that side.  I really see it as the only real weakness on this team right now.

DLine playing well....LB's are nasty...Safeties are solid....CB's have a chip on their shoulder and will be agressive...RB's are a very good stable...Hixon/Ginn/LaFell seem to be stepping it up...Olsen looks to have a great year.  We are a damn balanced and well rounded team.

Everyone is talking about the O-line, rightfully so, but I did zero in on the fact that our receiving corps seems to be what many of us thought they were.  Like I have harped on for years now: we are but one Smitty injury away from seeming disaster.

At 3pm today, we need to come on one accord, face the sun, kneel down in prayer and pray that Smitty gets through the season without injury... :P

I am thinking that it will be easier to fix the line, even if we don't do anything but get Wharton, but WTF are we gonna do at receiver? Hopefully Adams, Bersin or whoever can have a great showing with the first team.  I still don't believe it will be enough though.  With Zod's remarks about every TE not named Olsen being basicaly nondescript, we could always gamble the vet minimum on Kellen Winslow.

I am trying not to go all Chicken Little, but it makes me nervous hearing tweets that belie my greatest fear.

I doubt if Gettleman has any concerns about this OL, that he will wait until September to address it.

he has to look good this year. he has to show a big turnaround from the previous regime and get thing kicking right out of the gate. he cant afford to wait to fix it until after the season starts. that poo needs fixed soon to give the upgraded OL a chance to gel.

this is one case the answer isn't already on the roster. it's painfully obvious.

Agreed. I imagine we will see a few new faces in here by preseason.

Yea a QB should be able to throw the ball when a 300lb guy is right in his face as soon as the ball is snapped. With all-star linemen such as the great Jeff Byers, Garry Williams, and the almighty Byron Bell and Geoff Hangartner, any QB should be lucky to have these guys on their line.

He's one of the most athletic QBs to ever play in the NFL. That ability combined with a developed feel for pressure could be something of beauty to watch.

Well you cannot require Gettleman to fix everything within 6 months of managing this team. There a contracts, draft picks, cap situation and many more factors to take into consideration. Even though we have cap room right now, we will desperately need that next year with big contracts coming up.

Also I disagree, I think Gettleman have a okay amount of leash to get this team turned around and he has already made great strides as to position us well regarding players and their contracts. We will also for the first time in a long time have ALL of our draftpicks in the 2014 draft.

Rivera is on the hot seat not Dave.

I agree that the current players that can play RG and RT are the obvious liability on our team, but I trust Gettleman to find some sort of solution for the season that will not haunt us in 2014.
