camp tweets...so it begins

This is the same Cam Newton who I don't remember any kind of spotting of his rookie year when training camp began (certainly not an interview until later in).  He just slipped through the cracks.  Wouldn't surprise me if a similar thing happened here.

I was at the first practice Cam's rookie year at training camp, and trust me, the fans knew he was there. He definitely didn't try to hide it either. the second he walked onto the field, the fans roared and he smiled and waved and pretty much took it all in.

But, he definitely didn't slip through the cracks that day.

I didn't make it to camp last year, but I remember during Newton's rookie year there was a lot of speculation that the transition from college to pro was pretty rough on him at first.  People said when he left practices, he looked both mentally and physically exhausted.  When I visited, that was what I saw too.

Mind you, that's not unusual (especially for a quarterback) and I don't recall hearing any such things last season.

@thegoldenchild I grew up in socal and I happen to be a fan of that lousy angels team. That's all. Don't want to make this a baseball thread though. Back to Panther talk :-)

I am talking about media wise.  Newton didn't do anything media related once he arrived initially IIRC.  It took awhile before an interview with him actually happened and I don't recall hearing much about him, if any, arrival day and nothing until he came onto the field.

I was just hoping for a little pub. They showed a few other teams when their players first got to camp but I suppose we're not a large market team enough to get that kind of coverage.

How dare I think a channel called the NFL Network might actually mention our team. Foolish me.

I guess so because if your expecting news from a station that barely has the name Panthers in their mouth at a time of year where you have the NFL Draft or during the NFL season. Don't expect them to mention us when players are arriving to training camp. We are the Carolina Panthers fan we have to find our own information from places like twitter, or 10 years later from Joe Pearson.

There are a bunch of pictures on Panthers.com if anyone wants to check em out...

A couple that stood out to me though:

Bruce Campbell on the left (and Garry Williams on the right), man that's CRAZY for an o-lineman!  He has to be like 3% body fat...I hope the coaching staff can get something out of him cause he is a physical freak.  I knew he killed it at the combine but I don't think I'd ever seen a picture of him.

Colin Jones - dude looks pretty freaking big for a safety.  Maybe not Laron Landry-big...but he's got the build of a linebacker and he runs a 4.3 40.  We never hear anything about him in terms of competition at safety though...so I don't know if he'll ever contribute outside of Special Teams.  But with that kind of size and speed it's easy to see why he's a Special Teams ace.

Wait...is it gay that I'm checking out our players' bodies?  That's pretty normal right?  As long as both hands are on the keyboard...

Remember the good ole days when Jake would throw it up to Peppers in the endzone? I say we make Bruce Campbell a freak tight end to go with Greg Olsen.

Who's gonna stop a dude that big? The Gronk/Hernandez combo would be nothing compared to that.

plus, I think Byron Bell is going to have a breakout season this year.

    • That would be a great pick, he might be my favorite for us right now.
    • The coach- Canales was a rookie hc and at times looked like it. But he did manage to revamp the offense, helped Bryce not look like the biggest bust of the draft, exuded positivity,  and made the panthers watchable again. We have a viable head coach for the first time since rivera The gm- Morgan had some hits and some big misses. Hits- the ol, Coker, demani, dj at first. Misses- almost every d player signed, brooks, the jury is out on x. I get what he was trying to do with brooks/Hubbard but it blew up in his face. Hopefully he learns from his mistakes. But he did trade mingo for a 4th, managed to get a 2nd rounder this year from the Rams and I am a fan of constantly churning the bottom of the roster The draft- x can be a solid player but not until he catches the ball, brooks was a high risk pick that didn't work out, Wallace, demani and Chau Smith can be solid contributors and showed glimpses, Coker and jt should be mainstays. And flipping a 7th round lb that was about to be cut for Jackson was a great move.  The offense- had its ups and downs but Bryce has turned from one of the biggest busts in nfl history to a potential franchise qb, that change is worth its weight in gold, thielen was crafty and underrated as usual, Coker was a gem, jt was the solid but has some growing to do, and Hubbard has been awesome, the o line was much improved as well The defense- well...they set records, injuries, poor coaching (imo), bad playcalling and just plain sucking this defense needs everything to change, we need horn and Jackson back and we get brown back but we need bodies and an identity. If they can do with the def what they did with the o then we can challenge for the division bc we already have some pieces there.  Overall- this was a growth year full of questions and some of the major ones were answered(qb, coach). For the first time in a long time the season didn't end depressingly and I do have cautious optimism for next year. But they need to learn from the mistakes of 2024 and if they do I like where this team is headed. On to the draft and 2025
