Why are Fish Camps, umm, called Fish Camps?

Wilkes county isn't the mountains. 

 

So I guess all those mountains in Wilkes are just giant paper machete models.  :)

 

The western part of Wilkes is just as much "Mountains" as Watauga. 

The county's elevation ranges from 900 feet (375 meters) in the east to over 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) in the west. The Blue Ridge Mountains run from the southwest to the northeast, and dominate the county's western and northern horizons. Anyone remember Gus Purcell's on Independence Blvd with that vinegar slaw, or Hideaway fish camp on Monroe Rd., then there was the Seafarer with the big moving whale sign on Albermarle Rd, and Fish Farm in Matthews.  I'm talking about back in the day when these locales were rural, for those who also grew up around here.  It used to seem to take an hour to drive there from home, and now the city has grown up around them. 

 

Nostalgic, and yes - deep fried everything, a ton of popcorn shrimp, the red and white checkered table cloths, ketchup in the plain red squeeze bottles, sometimes hard to distinguish from the cocktail sauce squeeze bottle, sweet tea that was always a bit too sweet but still good, and that big lemon wedge to squeeze all over the fried goodness on your plate.  Takes me way back.  Don't forget the toothpick and mints on your way out the door.

I'm pretty sure it's a Piedmont thing. They've been called that for 60+ years around here. Damn yokels.

Yup. My whole family used to load up and go to one somewhere around Monroe when i was a kid. I think it was called Harolds. The last one i remember going to was across the road from sun valley high school back in the 90s.

I was in a restaurant a few weeks ago and I heard an older gentleman order "Salad Greens".   The waitress looked perplexed, until his son translated for her.  He meant turnip greens.

Oh my!!!!Thread had me reminiscing and just found out that.....Lineberger's is back. Looks like they reopened this year.

 

It was a Friday night event when I was a child.

Go to Linebuger's, SaltnPepper baby catfish, buy candy from their huge candy store...., go home and watch Dukes of Hazzard and Dallas.

 

Allright, need to adjust itinerary when I visit Charlotte this year......Panthers vs Saints, Linebergers, and oh yea, visit parents for Christmas.

I grew up in Chapel Hill in the 70s and 80s, never heard of it.  Must be a State thing.

 

 

For Gods Sake! They don't have Fish Camps in the Soocialist Republic of Chapel Hill.

 

I had one of the best snow crab leg meals in a fish camp near Tarboro.
