Wharton Meeting With Panthers

I just don't understand how Joe Person can be so bad.. I think he might actually be putting effort into being this bad. Wharton was drafted by us, he spent 7 years here, he was a fan favorite and a coaching staff favorite. It's Persons job to figure this poo out and he clearly can add up 2 + 2.

Wharton if healthy could be depth at guard but at tackle he has sucked worse than Bell.  Look at the numbers.  In 2005 he gave up 8.5 sacks, in 2007 he gave up 9 sacks.  I don't know how much tackle he played in 2009 but he again gave up 8.5 sacks.

Bell in 2012 had 3 penalties and gave up 8 sacks.

How is that so much worse???

Bell was playing RT.

Wharton was playing LT.

I remember Wharton Running Down field lead blocking for our running backs     Scioring touchdowns   Never gave up on the play

I remember one where he recovered a fumble near the goal line after a 50+ yard run. I was like how the hell was he even over there? He has some serious hustle.

His numbers in the past were before an ACL injury.  Plus here is an article which suggests that he is better pass blocking for stationary guys not mobile quarterbacks.  I don't know how great a fit he is for us right now outside of depth.

Take it for what it worth but remember it has been at least 2 full years since he was an effective pass blocker for  us. After a serious injury the jury is surely out.

meh.

I don't see how making/not making your blocks changes from the type of QB you have. Wharton either made his blocks or he didn't. The OC changed from 2010 to 2011, but his overall score was higher with Cam than in 2010 (scores on his pass/run block inverted scores as well). His overall also dipped from 08-09 from 9.6 to -0.4 but the QB type stayed the same.

You can't really conclude it was because of the style of QB though.

Not every team has two elite defensive ends. Bad example.

True. Many teams blitz linebackers off the right side as well.  Other teams move guys around to take advantage of perceived weaknesses. The old standard of the left tackle being the pass blocker and the right tackle being the running blocker has changed given that teams pass more from multiple formations and defenses use more unbalanced lines and zone blitzing.
