Wharton Meeting With Panthers

We might be able to do better, but at what cost? My guess is Wharton will come on the cheap for a 1 year deal, providing an upgrade and still giving us room to sign another vet or two (RT and S).

We really need a good Safety on at least a 2 year deal because next year's draft will be a very weak Safety class, at least as it looks right now.

I'm sure it'll be a 1 year deal.  With him coming off an injury and just being released, we have the upper hand.  I wouldn't be surprised if HE contacted US about coming back since he lives here.  He just needs a paycheck for this upcoming year I guess.   If he's cheap, why not.

if i recall correctly wharton's last season with us was marked by decent grading in pass protection but absolutely abysmal performance in the run game. he will be a good rotational guy for the right price but i hope we still keep an eye out for a guy who won't be a liability in any facet of the game.

Don't get ahead of yourself. I still am not in favor of picking him up. I think we can do better. But like most things in life, when they become inevitable I just learn to roll with the punches. If we sign him I will hope for the best.

As for evaluating talent. there is a reason I post here on a message board like you do instead of working for an NFL team. The difference is that I can do so without attacking others or enjoying ridiculing others. Some of us go around building things up while others like you try and tear them down.

Two things you don't realize that everybody else out here does

1. You rarely think independently about anything in this forum. Almost every argument you try to rationalize, even if it makes no sense is based on something the panthers do. When you do offer what you think is the truth about something, which I admit your judgment is fairly good at from time to time, as soon as the panthers contradict it you shift philosophies. That's not exactly what I'd call a reliable mentality.

2. Your tendency to self-aggrandize and hurl passive aggressive insults after maybe your third reply in any given debate make you come off as a dick.

Nice to know you have taken the time to analyze me.

First of all I don't claim any type of expertise rather I am a fan and discuss what I read, hear and see. Go back to 2010 where I ripped Richardson for gutting the team and killing all the talent and tell me how I always support the team's decisions.  And once again I was right about that too.

2.  How is my style any worse than your personal attacks and aggressive remarks which you dish out in opening remarks without any attempt to discuss or debate the topic at hand.  At least I hold back somewhat and make subtle barbs.  The difference here seems to be you try and add little to the forum except tearing posters down while I add to the conversation and generally build things up.  Do I sometimes make remarks when provoked? Absolutely.  Do I start the fight like you do and follow posters making derogatory remarks and personal attacks?   Never.

So forgive me if I sometimes call your attacks juvenile.  That is something everyone knows about you that you apparently don't.

Just because the Panthers are prepared to bring in a familiar player on the cheap doesn't change  Whartons performance his last year here. We brought Piggy back too. Lets not pretend he was an all world C and G here in Carolina and Buffalo. He was a familiar player that has remained remarkably healthy that signed for cheap. Hopefully Wharton will provide the same if he is signed. But the future is Amini and Kugbila at the G spots.

Anyone know if Wharton played any RG? Cant remember.

Wharton played the left side, guard and tackle.  Wonder if they'd move Amini to the right side since that's more traditionally the 'power' side and Wharton and Gross already have a lot of experience playing together.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
