Brock McGinn Ready To Join Brothers In NHL

Brock McGinn has a few advantages over the other Canes prospects at development camp.

McGinn has two older brothers in the NHL, so he's well-versed in all that it takes to reach the highest level of pro hockey. He also plays for the Guelph Storm of the OHL under coach Scott Walker, a former Canes forward, and is well-educated about the Hurricanes organization and what's expected of the players in it.

McGinn, a second-round draft pick last year, also appears to be the kind of forward and player Canes coach Kirk Muller likes and wants -- tough, always looking to hit people, playing bigger than his size. Muller likened McGinn, who's 5-11 and 186 pounds, to Mike Keane, a former teammate in Montreal and Dallas and a three-time Stanley Cup winner.

McGinn must either make the Canes' NHL roster this year or be sent back to Guelph for a fourth season of OHL hockey. Last season, he had 28 goals, 26 assists and 71 penalty minutes in 68 games, with a plus-7 rating, then four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in three playoff games.

As for those hockey bloodlines, Jamie McGinn is a forward with the Colorado Avalanche and Tye McGinn a forward with the Philadelphia Flyers. Brock McGinn hopes to make it a threesome in the NHL one day but realizes there's much work still to be done and that he has to try and stay patient.
