Is this not the hardest track out? (Only Rap fans comment)

YOLO!

I just jumped into this thread and saw this comment at random. This is beyond stupid, and it shows your age. Biggie was an icon and his killing was a tragedy. He was on top of the game when he died. He didn't become known for being gunned down.

What an idiotic thing to say.

Floppin spittin knowledge to the youngstas who don't know hiphop.

Biggie is the best rapper of all time, the only other person who is close to Biggie is 2 pac.

Your basis for comparison is from a viewpoint directly skewed by having grown up during the modern evolution of the genre. Biggie was amazing and was revolutionary for the time period. There were also "high play" rappers from that era who were total trash, similar to 2Chainz of today.  Biggie wasn't one of them.

Rather than saying I have a bias against earlier artists, I'd say it's the opposite because I was in like kindergarten when these guys were killed. I couldn't have been blinded by hype.

I'm a fan of Pete Rock/CL Smooth, Nas, Eric B/Rakim, Big L, Black Star, Wu Tang, NWA, etc. So I don't have some sort of bias against the "classic" side of hip-hop, I just never understood what was so great about Biggie. He has an interesting voice and flow, but so do a ton of other people. His lyrics didn't do much to separate him from the pack either. I just don't get it.

No sir not a troll, just a Panthers fan posting on a Panthers message board. I mean am I not good enough to post on the Huddle?

We all Panthers fans no need to hate each other.

Curbing your gimmick persona and not sending people PM's like a weirdo might help.

Didn't/don't disagree with anything you just said. I said he's overrated mainly because he was murdered. Besides, his music isn't all that great to begin with.

He was at the top of the game when he died? So you're saying if someone like 2 Chainz was killed today, a guy who is one of the most "popular" artists in hip-hop right now, he'd automatically have to be regarded as an all time great?

Lil Wayne was at the top of the game for a while. So was Nelly, 50, Nicki Minaj, Macklemore (?)

Would any of them go down as all time greats? I don't believe so, or at least not deservingly.

Same goes for Big Pun. He died near the peak of his popularity, and now he's regarded as one of the best ever. Listen to his music though, it's far from iconic or revolutionary.

When were Nelly, Nicki and Macklemore at the top of the game?

When were Nelly, Nicki and Macklemore at the top of the game?

In terms of popularity? Nelly in the early 2000's with Country Grammar and Nellyville. Nicki these past 3 years or so when she was featured in everything and was heard everywhere. Macklemore right now. His first two singles went #1 on Billboard and his 3rd single is still climbing, but has reached the top 10 or 15.

See I was thinking lyrically, awards, sales, etc., not just being popular. I can understand an argument for Nelly but I don't think anybody has considered Nicki at the top of the game just because she gets radio play.

Well why would I be arguing that Biggie was overrated while saying he was undoubtedly at the top of the game? I would say, as defined in the context of popularity because being "overrated" is directly related to one's popularity, that they were/are at the "top of the game". Besides, Nicki wins awards and sells albums too, and she's a huge polarizing icon in the entertainment world which helps vault her name alone.

If we were talking about the whole shebang, then I'd be throwing out names like Kanye and Jay, who will be going down amongst the greatest of all time, even though I personally think Jay is also overrated.

The point of my argument is that death will and does help an artist out tremendously if he doesn't see too much regression in popularity or fan credibility beforehand. If you don't think Mack, Nicki, Nelly would be good examples, fine. But take Weezy or 50 as an example. If they had tragically passed at their peaks, would they be regarded higher than they are right now? Undoubtedly so. Will they be classified as all time greats otherwise? Maybe, but probably unrightfully so.

i remember when Nelly was at the top of the game, it started with his first single and lived through the band-aid faze and kinda fazed out after that "i am #1" song faded out

Nelly was so dope, and I don't even know why. His lyrics and production weren't really anything special, but he had some sort of captivating personality and energy.
