The Open

Remember the US Open in Pinehurst, I think in 99?  He had a chance to win but was going to leave at any point if his wife went into labor.   Payne Stewart won that Open and died a few months later.  When he won, on the 18th green, Payne said to Phil...you are going to be a great father.

He has always been a family guy.  And also remember...he has a chronic medical condition...psoriatic arthritis.

The announcers described Phil as classy several times. He is a good guy who cares about others.

I've met him briefly when he came out to the whitewater center last year to go rafting with his daughter when he was in town for the Wellsfargo tourney , total class act. genuine nice guy.
