Canes Re-Sign Jared Staal

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed right wing Jared Staal to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Staal $550,000 on the NHL level or $60,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level during the 2013-14 season.

 

Staal, 22, appeared in his first NHL season in 2012-13, skating in two games with the Hurricanes. The Thunder Bay, Ont., native established career highs in games played (52), goals (4), assists (3), points (7) and penalty minutes (25) on the AHL level with Charlotte. Staal made his NHL debut on April 25 against the New York Rangers, starting the game on the same line with his two older brothers, Eric and Jordan. It marked the fourth time in NHL history that a trio of brothers played for the same team during the same season, and the first since Peter, Anton and Marian Stastny did so for Quebec in 1985.

 

Selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the second round, 49th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Staal was acquired by the Hurricanes on May 13, 2010, in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He has totaled eight goals and 10 assists (18 points) in 119 career AHL games with San Antonio, Providence and Charlotte.

 

There are a few people that believe that Jared Staal is the key to acquiring Marc Staal in 2015. A few people with knowledge of the situation have said that while Jordan and Eric are close, Jared and Marc are just as close. This could potentially mean the Hurricanes plan to have all four Staal's on the permanent roster by 2015.

I think this might be the reason we don't make a defensive move this season.  We can let Pits walk next year as an UFA and sign Marc.

Would have been sweet if Jared had 1/4th of the talent as his brothers but I guess the magic runs out after child 3.

Lol, mom stopped serving the magic meatloaf after she popped Marc out.

However, I wouldn't mind having Jared on the fourth line. He is already a better skater than Westgarth and has more of an offensive game. If he can learn how to fight he might be able to latch on as a 4th line winger.

I forgot to mention. Dalpe and Boychuk are the only remaining RFA's that we have left to sign.

Dalpe might be able to make the full time jump this year with their being an opening on Lindholms wing on the third line. My guess is that it's between him and Rask.
