Jury Duty?

YOLO!

Recommended Posts

So I get a letter in the mail and it says I have to do jury duty for a week. I don't know how this stuff works. So do they just pick out random people?

Is there anyway I can get out of doing jury duty? If so please tell me what I need to do because I really don't have any interest sitting in a courtroom all day.

You can get out of it, but it has to be medically related in most scenarios.

They'll pick random people and take them for an interview and/or selection process.  It can get pretty boring sitting a room waiting for your name or nothing.  Take a book or two.

So what if I have to work? Is that a good excuse?

don't try to "get out of it". its a great learning exp and can only add to your perspective of the judicial system.

I would do it if I had the free time, but I have to work to pay my bills. What happens if you don't show up? A fine would be my guess.

Your employer legally has to pay you for full time for like the first week of work missed for jury duty I believe.

Yea they have to if you have to keep going for a full week. Anything less is up to the employer. Which is pretty shitty. They should pay no matter what.

you'll go, sit in a courtroom for like 20 minutes while they pick random ppl. You'll swear on a bible, then leave.  That's it. Shouldn't take you away from work that long.

That's it?

Cool no problem, I thought it would be a all day type of thing.

Thanks!

My wife got called for a shoplifting case.  They asked her what she did for a living, she told them Retail Store Manager and they said "Dismissed."

She got called for a murder case.  They asked her if she had an opinion of the Insanity Defense.  She said "It's a cop out", they said "Dismissed".

All I want to know is who do I talk to to get out of doing this?

Hard to get out of it man.  Work isn't a reason.  Your employer has to let you off for Jury Duty.  If you are summoned and don't appear, in some states you'll be charged.

BUT, at the same time, (for arguments sake I'll assume you're in NC).  Many systems will have an automated line that you call after like 6 PM the night before just to make sure you are needed.  You could call that number and be told you don't have to report.
